Liverpool are in contact to sign the perfect midfielder.

Midfield is shaping up to be one of Liverpool's biggest priorities this summer, with sporting director Richard Hughes already hard at work planning the club's next recruitment drive.

Liverpool have put together an ambitious shortlist of midfield targets and are ready to strike when the time is right.

The Reds have built a reputation for doing their homework early and moving quickly once the window opens. Hughes and the recruitment team have already done a lot of work behind the scenes, but they've had to be a bit slower this time around because of the uncertainty looming over the club's current players.

The need for reinforcements has only grown as rumours swirl about the future of several key players at Anfield.

Alexis Mac Allister's contract talks have reportedly stalled, while Curtis Jones is about to enter the final year of his current deal. With speculation continuing over both players' futures, Liverpool are keeping their options open in case they need to act.

As things stand, the club are preparing for the possibility of a major midfield reshuffle. The expectation is that Liverpool will look to bring in at least two new midfielders this summer, although that number could increase if Mac Allister and Jones both leave before the window closes.

Whatever happens, strengthening the middle of the pitch is expected to be one of Hughes' main objectives.

Liverpool want to add quality, competition and long-term depth to a position that could look very different by the start of next season, ensuring the squad is well equipped for the years ahead.

But whoever comes into the midfield has to be right profile.

Last season, the midfield and the style of play Arne Slot wanted at the club didn't mesh together very well. Now Andoni Iraola is in charge and his philosophy will require more intensity and more dynamism.

Liverpool's current midfield options either have to step up to the mark or they are going to be replaced.

And this is before we even mention that while additions do hinge on what happens to Mac Allister and Jones, let's be honest even if both of them stay, Liverpool will still likely need another addition.

The good news is that the club isn't sitting idle. They are going to be making moves and they already are making moves behind the scenes.

One of the players on Liverpool's radar is someone who is insane and who could be as good as Elliot Anderson. The stats prove it anyway.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Liverpool have made contact to sign Joao Gomes, who is also on Manchester United's radar.

Liverpool have monitored Gomes before, while he was at Flamengo and he's been linked with a move to Anfield several times over the course of the last few years.

At first glance Gomes may not seem like an incredible addition, however, looking beyond the fact that he would be arriving from a relegated team, there's so much to like about the Brazilian.

He's an insane midfielder. He's essentially a cheat-code - someone almost as good as Anderson, who went for £116m to Manchester City. Meanwhile, Gomes could be available for around £35-£45m.

One of Anderson's biggest qualities and why City signed him is for his ability to win the ball. Yet Gomes is not far behind him in this area.

Only Anderson (231) won more ground duels than the Wolves midfielder (199) in the Premier League last season. He's a press resistant midfielder who covers a lot of distances, works tirelessly and is a good ball carrier as well.

This could be the perfect addition for Liverpool. Gomes would bring intensity and duel-winning ability at the heart of the Reds' midfield.
