Throughout last season and the summer transfer window, Liverpool had a lot of decisions to make about their squad.

Andoni Iraola was appointed as the Reds' new boss and, while people were excited to see how things would go, nobody could have anticipated how quickly they've improved.

At the moment, across all competitions, Liverpool are unbeaten.

And, a team that lacked direction last term now has a clear goal and a clear way of playing.

But, since only four new players were signed by them last summer, some more additions still need to be made.

However, with the contracts of many members of Liverpool's first-team squad set to expire in the near future, decisions also need to be made on that front.

And, after the recent performance of one man, it feels like Iraola needs to make a U-turn on a decision he made in summer.

Liverpool have to offer Alexis Mac Allister a new contract

Alexis Mac Allister is a bit of a curious case.

Last season, the Argentinian was one of Liverpool's biggest under performers.

Every single time Arne Slot chose to play him, it felt like he'd forgotten how to run and tackle.

However, during the 2026 World Cup, something changed and, since his return to Anfield, he's become one of their best midfielders.

At the start of the 2026-27 campaign, Liverpool tried to use Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in a double pivot but, since both of them want to push forward and neither of them can really tackle, it didn't work out.

This led to Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni both being used and, during Wednesday's 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister was easily one of Liverpool's best players.

In fact, he even netted Liverpool's winning goal with a glorious strike from just outside of the box.

But, since the Argentinian's contract is set to expire in 2028, time is running out for a new deal to be agreed.

And, after these recent performances, even though Liverpool clearly don't want to extend his stay, it feels like they now have to.

Liverpool must make their decision on Alexis Mac Allister soon

As mentioned, with Mac Allister's contract set to expire in 2028, Liverpool don't have all that much time left to make their final decision on his future.

Recent reports have indicated that someone such as Lamine Camara could be targeted as early as January to come in and replace the 27-year-old.

However, one thing that needs to be considered is whether the Ligue 1 ace would be able to live up to the standards that Mac Allister has recently set.

Obviously, if the Argentinian regresses then it's a no-brainer for Liverpool to make their move for a new central midfielder but, with how up in the air everything is at the moment, there's no clear direction for the Anfield outfit to take.

Iraola also has to make his mind up about whether he thinks Mac Allister has what it takes to warrant giving him a two, or even three year extension.

All of these things need to be considered because, if Liverpool let him run down his contract and allow him to exit for nothing in the future much like Trent Alexander-Arnold or Ibrahima Konate, some serious questions will need to be asked.

For now, the "outstanding" midfielder is doing all he can to extend his stay but, at the end of the day, it'll be up to Liverpool whether he stays or goes.
