Liverpool are hurtling towards a controversial transfer. One that may have Andoni Iraola - and fans - scratching their heads.

Liverpool had a strange old summer. They lost three key players in Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate and arguably didn't replace any of them.

Konate has the most obvious 'replacement'. Jeremy Jacquet has taken on his role and done so brilliantly, though the 21-year-old was signed before his compatriot decided to leave.

The plan had been for Jacquet to play alongside Konate, not entirely replace him. Still, it's ended up working out (for now).

Robertson just hasn't been replaced full stop. Kostas Tsimikas returned from his loan at AS Roma and slotted into the backup left-back role, but the Greek international was supposed to have left the club last year.

Then there's Salah. Now, Liverpool did splash the cash to try and replace his output, signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for a lot of money. Victor Munoz also arrived to carry some of the burden.

But neither are right-sided wingers. Both play off their right foot from the left, and Liverpool never did sign someone to play from the right.

Liverpool go again

The truly mad thing is that Liverpool may now sign another left-winger. They currently have four in their squad with zero able to operate naturally from the right.

Barcola, Munoz, Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha are all more comfortable on the left. All like to cut inside.

Now TeamTalk reports that Liverpool are serious contenders to sign Kevin Schade from Brentford, yet another right-footed winger who wants to cut inside. The market on the other side is admittedly terrible but this seems insane - literally the last thing the squad needs is a fifth player for one position.

It's difficult to believe that Andoni Iraola would be happy with that. This squad need balance and that means finding someone who can operate naturally on the right and make the position their own.

Not to mention the effect on Ngumoha. Liverpool didn't sign a left-winger last summer as they didn't want to block his pathway. Now they've signed two in front of him and want a third? Madness.
