The improvement of Liverpool’s defence has been one of the biggest talking points of Andoni Iraola’s reign at Anfield so far.

Jeremy Jacquet and Virgil van Dijk have formed an impressive partnership, and new arrival Ronald Araujo has done brilliantly as a makeshift right-back.

After facing plenty of criticism last season under Arne Slot, the Reds’ backline now looks like one of the best in the country again, and it has been well and truly future proofed.

Jacquet is just 21-years-old and Ifeanyi Ndukwe looks an increasingly promising prospect, but it is Giovani Leoni who is arguably the most exciting young defender at the club.

Julian Ward must make tough Leoni decision

When he arrived from Parma in a £26 million deal in 2025, Leoni was one of the most exciting defensive prospects in world football.

The Italian teenager suffered a devastating injury on his Reds’ debut however and has been sidelined for a year since.

Now as the 19-year-old nears a return to training, Juventus are reportedly eyeing a loan deal with Liverpool.

The Italian giants are reportedly very keen to bring the young defender in for the rest of the season, but the Reds are reluctant to let their starlet leave.

With Jacquet, Van Dijk, Araujo and Joe Gomez to compete with, minutes will be limited for Leoni when he returns this season.

That may be the perfect scenario, allowing him to be eased back into the flow of first-team football, but playing regularly in his home country could be exactly what the teen sensation needs to get back to 100%.

With Van Dijk and Gomez both out of contract at the end of this season, loaning out Leoni to get him more first-team minutes could be a perfect plan.

Having the Italian ready to slot right in and replace one of Liverpool’s outgoing defenders after a few months of regular football at Juventus would be ideal.

Ward has a tough decision to make, but Juve’s plan for Leoni makes a lot of sense assuming the Italian stays fit.
