Liverpool have taken steps in recent transfer windows to safeguard the future at centre-back.

Jeremy Jacquet - a £60m arrival from Rennes - has been a revelation, slotting in alongside Virgil van Dijk in his debut Anfield campaign.

But others have arrived too as Andoni Iraola wrestles with the conundrum of losing the captain - as well as Joe Gomez - when their contracts expire in summer 2027.

Leoni suffers devastating injury blow

We’ve seen Liverpool conclude deals for Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe - two of the best young centre-backs in world football.

The one who kicked it all off however was Giovanni Leoni. The 19-year-old signed from Parma in summer 2025 for around £26m - but was hit with a devastating injury on debut.

The Italian defender suffered a torn ACL and has been out of action for more than a year.

Juventus want loan deal for Leoni

Leoni continues to work on his match fitness but given the form of both Jacquet and Van Dijk it is hard to envisage him receiving any meaningful game time this term.

Juventus have therefore spotted an opportunity - with a report in Gazzetta dello Sport claiming the Serie A giants are pulling out all the stops to get Leoni on loan.

A loan deal could be good for Leoni

“Juventus also made inquiries about a loan move in recent months,” the report reads.

“Liverpool have not opened the door and are expecting Leoni to play after the international break.

“At Continassa, they haven't given up: technical director Massara and sporting director Ottolini will have scouts monitoring the Roman defender every week.”

Leoni is under contract until 2031 and so will have plenty of time to prove himself in Liverpool red. Staff behind the scenes are said to have been very impressed with the manner in which the centre-back has been working in his recovery.

A half-season on loan with the prospect of first-team minutes in a top European league may therefore be seen as a good step on the road towards full fitness for the Merseysiders ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
