Liverpool's main idea from the last couple of transfer windows has been to prepare for the future.

One thing that Premier League clubs seem to be doing far too often these days is letting smaller teams sign exciting youngsters for pennies.

Usually, the way things end up working out is that, after a couple of solid seasons, the smaller club that took the risk on the youngster ends up bringing in millions of profit.

As, even though everyone could see how good they were going to be, none of the bigger teams wanted to take that chance on them.

This then leads to Premier League clubs spending way over the odds for players who they could've got at a fraction of the price a couple of years prior.

And, for the moment, things look likely to continue playing out this way with Liverpool now entering the race for a highly-rated youngster.

Liverpool have sent their scouts to watch Paul Wanner in action

Paul Wanner is almost certainly a name that most Liverpool fans won't have heard of.

However, the fact that he's already played 155 games throughout his career and has contributed to 47 goals across all competitions should be enough to entice them into finding out.

However, the best thing about the Austrian is that he's still only 20 years old.

Naturally, he's a number 10 but, throughout his career he's been used everywhere apart from centre-back, right-back and goalkeeper.

So, not only is he extremely versatile but, he's also one of PSV's most important players at the moment.

Last season alone, the midfielder featured in 33 games across all competitions and was even given a chance on the wing.

And now, thanks to his major progress after exiting Bayern Munich, Liverpool have sent their scouts to watch him in action.

"At this stage, interest from top clubs is primarily focused on thorough scouting. An official, written transfer offer to PSV Eindhoven has not yet been made. Interested teams are gathering reports on the 20-year-old's performances and analyzing his development," Sportowy shared.

"Liverpool are expected to assess whether Wanner could enhance creativity and mobility in midfield in the future. Other Premier League clubs are conducting similar analyses.

"The German midfielder's name has also been added to Real Madrid's shortlist, which is considering the young player as part of its long-term midfield planning.

"Bayern Munich's situation is particularly significant. The German club is closely monitoring the development of its former player due to the terms of his contract. Bayern has mechanisms in place to re-sign the player and have priority over certain transfer decisions.

"Bayern Munich's stance could be crucial to Paul Wanner's future and a potential transfer to another European powerhouse. Should specific offers come from English or Spanish clubs, Bayern's terms could significantly impact the negotiations.

"Following the midfielder's recent performances, interest is expected to gradually increase. Concrete talks and the first official offers could emerge in the coming months as clubs begin preparations for the next transfer window.

"According to current reports, PSV Eindhoven would be seeking around €45-50 million for Paul Wanner."

Paul Wanner would be a bold acquisition for Liverpool

Since Bayern have a buy-back clause in Wanners' contract, Liverpool would have to be extremely quick to offer him a deal.

Obviously, it would be up to the Austrian which team he wants to join but, if the Bundesliga outfit can offer more playing time or an easier route to the starting XI, there's no contest between which team he'd choose.

At the moment, Liverpool have Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott who can all be used as the number 10.

Indeed, Elliott is currently out on loan to Valencia but, upon his return from loan, he'll be trying to give his all to finally get his Liverpool career back on track.

However, if the Reds can convince him to join them, Wanner would be an exceptional signing.

The price tag that PSV are demanding is a little steep but, with how good he is and how mature he already is despite being just 20 years old, it feels like the youngster could be worth the risk.

That is, even if they are already sorted for number 10s for the next few years.
