Liverpool have completed a signing for a defender with the announcement now imminent.

It has been quite a remarkable transfer window for the Reds so far, and not in a positive way.

Richard Hughes has allegedly been juggling two jobs at once according to some reports, although how true that the club's current sporting director has been working on both deals for Liverpool and his soon to be employer Al Hilal is moot.

But either way it's fair to say the former Bournemouth man has not done his job in a satisfactory way.

This summer was about fixing the wrongs that Liverpool were unable to fix last summer. It was about putting the club's errors right.

And most importantly fixing the holes in the squad and finding an adequate replacement for Mo Salah.

None of that has been done with less than 48 hours left in the window.

Liverpool are still scrambling to find an heir to Salah's throne and it doesn't look like they are making a move to sign a midfielder, even though they probably need to.

So what does the next few hours hold? It could potentially determine the fate of Liverpool for the next few years. What is going to happen could be monumental.

Richard Hughes' plans for Liverpool on deadline day

The priority still seems to be signing a right-sided attacker. Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr are the primary targets and if Liverpool manage to sign one of them, then Cody Gakpo will be free to join Manchester City for £85m.

It's a surprise decision, considering Liverpool don't often sell to rivals - especially when it's a move that would on paper weaken the club rather than strengthen it.

But Liverpool are operating in a different way under Hughes.

The next few hours will be frantic and unpredictable. Liverpool will be doing business in all sorts of areas and with all sorts of clubs.

There is the possibility of the Reds signing an alternative attacker. Brighton are holding out for a high fee to sell Minteh and Palace do not want to sell Sarr.

Liverpool will be looking at more attainable targets.

The Reds' recruitment team will also be keeping an eye on transfers across the board. If the right opportunity arises for a midfielder to come in, Liverpool might pounce on the opportunity.

Lamine Camara is someone they are going to be keeping a close eye on. But they will also be signing a new defender.

Liverpool to sign new defender

For a long time now, Liverpool have been building for a future without Virgil van Dijk, whose contract expires in the summer of 2027.

Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are very much seen as the future of the Reds. But Liverpool also have Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye on their books, who are both highly rated.

Now according to the latest reports, Liverpool are going to add one more defender to their ranks.

Lewis Bower has reported that Liverpool have completed a move to sign Dara Jikiemi from Celtic, with the announcement now expected to be coming very soon.

It's an exciting move for a very talented 16-year-old defender, who will represent the future of the club.

But Liverpool fans will hope he isn't the only new defender coming in. The Reds still need a right-back.
