Liverpool are closing in on signing exciting 16-year-old winger Ben Doak from Celtic's academy.

Jurgen Klopp has massively improved Liverpool's academy since he joined the Reds in 2015.

A major part of this improvement has been down to moving out of the legendary Melwood, expanding the youth setup to Kirkby and establishing the AXA Training Centre where the youth players can watch the first team squad every day.

Since moving, we have seen some incredible talent come through the system. Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley & Owen Beck just to name a few.

However, Liverpool haven't just relied on youth players nurtured in their own academy for years. Over the past few years, we've seen the Reds poach youngsters from other clubs.

Harvey Elliott from Fulham, Kaide Gordon from Derby & Bobby Clark from Newcastle United are some of the most exciting examples of this.

Now, it looks like Liverpool are set to repeat that trend and sign a highly-rated 16-year-old from Celtic's academy.

As reported by James Pearce of The Athletic, Liverpool are 'closing in' on signing Ben Doak, who has yet to sign his first professional contract with Celtic.

Pearce also said that the prospect of working with Klopp and his track record of promoting young players to the first-team squad was pivotal to Doak's decision to leave his boyhood club.

The report also claims that Celtic would only be due minor compensation if the move concludes, due to him not signing a contract with the Scottish club.

Anfield Watch Verdict

This is another great move for Liverpool's academy. From bringing players through like Jay Spearing and Jon Flanagan to promoting exciting youngsters like Elliott and Morton, it's been a massive step up for our youth setup in such a short space of time.

Doak has already played two senior games for Celtic, making his debut against Dundee United in January.

Hopefully, the Scottish lad can follow in the footsteps of Elliott and Trent Alexander-Arnold and become a mainstay in Klopp's first-team squad.
