Liverpool still have a lot of changes that need to be made to their first-team squad.

Even though over £600 million has been spent across the last couple of seasons, it still doesn't really feel like the Reds are any better off.

These are the thoughts of a lot of people because, with the January transfer window now just around the corner, fans are wanting even more additions to be made.

And, with how poor the Reds are in some areas of the pitch, these changes are well needed across the board.

However, before anything gets underway, some decisions on their current crop of players need to be made with Julian Ward now making his stance on one first-team star clear.

Liverpool are talking to Trey Nyoni about a contract extension

Trey Nyoni has been one of the breakout players among Liverpool's ranks this season.

The midfielder looked likely to be sent out on loan when it was Arne Slot at the helm but, from the very minute that Andoni Iraola took over, he wanted the Englishman to stay put.

Indeed, this was probably due to the fact that Curtis Jones was sold to Inter Milan, but, even so, he's now become an important first-team member.

In fact, he's arguably been the Reds' second-best central midfielder after Alexis Mac Allister.

This has led to fans wanting him to feature in every game possible with most of them rather taken aback after Iraola subbed him off against Arsenal on Sunday.

However, his performances haven't only just caught the eyes of fans as, according to The Athletic, Liverpool are now in "advanced talks" with the 19-year-old about a contract extension.

"Trey Nyoni is in advanced talks with Liverpool over a contract extension," they wrote.

"The 19-year-old has been discussing his future with the club for months and there’s hope a breakthrough will follow soon. While a new deal has yet to be finalised, there is optimism an agreement will be reached.

"Liverpool are keen to reward the young midfielder with fresh terms as he continues to impress under Andoni Iraola."

Alexis Mac Allister's time with Liverpool is clearly over

Liverpool managing to lock Nyoni down to a new long-term deal is obviously massive news.

However, it does feel like this could be the final nail in the coffin for Mac Allister's time as a Liverpool player.

As mentioned, the Argentinian has been the Reds' best midfielder this season but, with his contract set to expire in June 2028, the Reds are questioning whether it's worth offering him a new deal or not.

On the face of things, you'd think that Liverpool would jump at the chance to keep him around but, after Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were given new deals last season, there probably isn't that much money left for another long-term deal for a regular starter.

And, especially now that Nyoni is being offered a new deal, it feels like Ward has chosen against extending his contract.

Obviously, with a new ownership team likely to enter the frame in the near future, Mac Allister's situation could completely change but, right now, the "wonderful" midfielder's time with Liverpool looks like it's reached its natural end.
