Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Jorge Mendes about one of his clients. The Spain star in question is ready to move clubs.

Liverpool are currently figuring out exactly who to move for next year. That’s not an easy discussion - it feels like half the squad needs a degree of reshaping right now.

Prioritising who comes and goes is a pain. Do Liverpool need a new midfielder? A new winger? A new striker? A new centre-back? A new right-back? A new left-back? You can legitimately claim all of them hold priority right now and argue for their case.

Which is a completely ridiculous situation to be in after spending £500m in two summers. But that’s the situation new sporting director Julian Ward has been left in.

Now, he certainly won’t be signing new players in all of those roles in January. One or two could happen, though, and it sounds as though progress has been made on one position.

Liverpool in talks with Jorge Mendes

Sport claims that Jorge Mendes has held talks with Liverpool about his client, Barcelona's Alejandro Balde. The left-back was heavily linked with a move away in the summer but opted to remain in Catalonia.

However, opportunities haven't popped up as he'd like and the left-back is now open to moving. Liverpool aren't the only club in talks with Mendes, though they may feel they're the best-placed to need a player in that position.

No one arrived in the summer to replace Andy Robertson. Instead, Kostas Tsimikas returned from AS Roma, where he'd endured a difficult loan spell last season.

It creates a strange position for Liverpool, too. The jury remains out on Milos Kerkez but Tsimikas isn't viewed as a genuine competition to be the left-back going forward. The latter's contract also expires at the end of the season, meaning he's not a long-term option.

Thus Liverpool do need to sign someone. Either in January or in the summer. It sounds as though the door is open to get Balde in January, though, as we imagine they'll push to get that done.

So things might just move quickly from here.
