Incredible Liverpool star officially loses place after 9 years
One all-time Liverpool great has reportedly lost his place after nine years. This is the end.
Tuttosport claims that Liverpool have decided to focus on Giorgi Mamardashvili over Alisson Becker going forward. It's a bold decision from the Reds but they appear to believe it's time to move on.
That, of course, is a theme right now. Liverpool will say goodbye to both Mo Salah and Andy Robertson after this season, while there's also a feeling that Alisson could leave, too.
The club triggered a one-year extension on the goalkeeper's contract to keep him until 2027 but there's a sense that they only did that to get a fee for him this summer. Juventus are heavily interested, as per multiple reports out of Italy.
Liverpool's willingness to entertain offers for Alisson comes from this focus on Mamardashvili. The Georgian was signed in 2024 but only joined up with the club a year later.
He's played second fiddle to the Brazilian over this season, though has had plenty of games thanks to Alisson's injury record. It seems he won't need to wait for injuries to get the same opportunities in 2026/27 - Mamardashvili will isntead be first-choice.
Giorgi Mamardashvili: Situation Summary
Performance and Stats at Liverpool
As of 23 April 2026, Giorgi Mamardashvili has emerged as a reliable deputy at Liverpool during Alisson Becker’s injury absences. In the 2025/26 Premier League season, the 25-year-old Georgian has made eight appearances (688 minutes), maintaining a 67.5% save percentage and keeping two clean sheets. His underlying numbers include 27 saves and a 50% penalty save rate, though his distribution reflects a 71% pass completion rate. He also featured seven times in the Champions League before Liverpool's quarter-final exit to PSG.
Injury Update and Transfer Talk
Mamardashvili is currently sidelined after being stretchered off during the 2–1 Merseyside derby win on 19 April. While initially hospitalised with a deep knee wound, scans confirmed no serious ligament damage. He is expected to be out for two to four weeks, likely missing fixtures against Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Despite a contract running until 2031, his desire for regular first-team football has sparked summer transfer rumours, with Atletico Madrid reportedly weighing up a €28.3 million bid. For now, he remains Georgia’s undisputed number one ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
