Liverpool have been searching for a new midfielder. Now their perfect player has announced himself.

Liverpool certainly need a midfielder. The Reds needed one heading into last summer and we were actually quite shocked that they left the transfer window without one.

Even more bizarre, they sold Curtis Jones and didn’t replace him. So Liverpool actually came out of the summer even lighter than they went in, despite going into the window clearly needing a midfielder.

The season so far has shown the need is still there. Liverpool have gaps through the middle and look vulnerable on the counter-attack.

Though, Andoni Iraola does appear to have found a fix by finding a new midfielder. One who has no right to be as good as he is.

Trey Nyoni, starboy

Trey Nyoni has been a revelation this season, quite honestly. The teenager stepped up to the first-team level after a disappointing campaign last season and looks completely at home.

Not that last season was his fault. Arne Slot just didn’t trust him but Iraola has shown a complete willingness to throw him in.

That’s been rewarded with a demonstration of Nyoni’s ability to play the holding midfield role. i.e. the exact role that Liverpool have lacked.

But Nyoni has the ability to read the game that’s required there. We saw that against Brighton, even, as the teenager arrived late in the box to sniff out a last-minute chance for the Seagulls.

We’ve seen it in his ability to control the tempo. To have the most passes in the match (vs Villarreal) and complete them consistently.

Liverpool have needed this player. It’s quite clearly Nyoni right now and the next couple of months will bring tough decisions on whether to persist or sign someone a bit more ‘ready’ for the top level.

But getting in the way of his enormous potential may well be a mistake. Nyoni really does look like the real deal.
