Liverpool are closing in on a brilliant attacker this summer.

Liverpool don’t often re-sign players once they’ve moved on, it's not really in the club's DNA.

Historically, only a handful of players have ever had two spells at Anfield. Names like Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush and Craig Bellamy stand out.

There are very few players who even get the chance to play for Liverpool once, it's a huge privilege, so doing it twice usually means you’ve left a real mark on the club and its supporters.

The players who have done it before are the kinds of players the fans really connect with.

Fowler was idolised by the Kop, famously nicknamed “God” for what he brought to the team, while Rush remains Liverpool’s all-time top scorer.

Bellamy also became something of a cult hero, even if his first spell ended a bit earlier than expected. When he came back, he played an important part in helping the team win the League Cup, including the run to Wembley.

In the modern game, second chances like that at Liverpool are pretty rare. But right now, there’s a situation developing where that idea might actually make sense again.

It’s the sort of opportunity Richard Hughes may find hard to ignore if the conditions are right. Not every return works out, of course, but the club’s history shows that when it does, it can be special.

Fowler and Rush are the obvious benchmarks - legends who defined what it means to score and succeed at Liverpool. And that’s exactly why any potential return has to be considered very carefully, because when it works, it really can be unforgettable.

But who are the players on the market right now who deserve a second-chance? Whose previous spell was cut too short because the manager did not trust them?

Obviously, Mo Salah is the first player that comes to mind. But financially that's a deal that probably doesn't make a lot of sense for Liverpool.

There is one though that does.

Darwin Nunez is not wanted at Al Hilal and he could be available on a free transfer this summer.

The Uruguayan was a player Liverpool fans didn’t quite appreciate while he was wearing the Liverbird on his chest. But in hindsight he was an important option.

A lot of the focus always went on his finishing, and the missed chances inevitably stood out. But that alone never really told the full story of what he gave the team.

Nunez was chaos in the best way possible. He ran constantly, pressed aggressively, and never gave defenders a moment’s peace. Even when he wasn’t scoring, he was still affecting games by stretching back lines, pulling defenders out of shape, and creating space for others to exploit. His work off the ball often set the tone for Liverpool’s attacking play.

There was definitely a raw edge to his game, and that sometimes led to frustration in front of goal when composure let him down. But effort was never in question. Every sprint, every press, every recovery run showed a level of commitment that fans could connect with.

In many ways, he summed up the energy Liverpool wanted to play with under Jurgen Klopp - direct, fearless, and always willing to take risks. He kept attacks unpredictable and often raised the intensity just by sheer determination.

He may not go down as the most clinical striker in the club’s history, but his impact wasn’t just about goals. Nunez brought energy, unpredictability, and personality to the side - qualities that don’t always show up in statistics, but absolutely matter over the course of a season.

And now according to Martin Charquero writing on X, a reliable Uruguayan journalist, Nunez is set to return to Anfield. The claim is that the incredible attacker will join Liverpool with the confirmation set to follow. Not in the coming days though because the player has asked to focus on the national team for now as Uruguay begin the World Cup against Saudi Arabia on Monday night.

This is a reliable source, claiming something extraordinary. But as returns go, Nunez really is the perfect fairy-tale story of redemption.
