Cody Gakpo's future has been heavily discussed over the last few weeks.

The Dutchman was rather poor under Arne Slot during the 2025-26 campaign as he barely managed double figures in goal contributions.

Most people expected him to thrive without Luis Diaz competing for the same position in Liverpool's starting XI but, looking back, it feels like he may have needed that competition to get the best out of him.

Thanks to this lack of form, most of Liverpool's fanbase wanted to see the back of Gakpo and, since Tottenham are seemingly interested in signing him, that could actually end up happening.

Cody Gakpo has not asked to leave Liverpool

At the moment, Tottenham are the team leading the way to acquire Gakpo's services.

Roberto de Zerbi is leading a massive rebuild in N17 with other players such as Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes also linked with a switch.

Spurs did even worse than Liverpool last season as they finished two points clear of the relegation zone in 17th place.

This has led to almost every area of their squad being re-jigged with Gakpo finding himself on their shortlist.

Many rumours have emerged about the Dutchman's future, including some about him actually asking to exit Anfield.

But now, while speaking to Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch has seemingly put those rumours to bed.

"One thing that was played down, this idea that he's asked to leave, is nonsense,” he said.

“At the moment, the player's focus is on the World Cup as 1 understand it, but maybe when he comes back, there's a real chance for him to go. It does rely on people stumping up the money, but it seems there's interest in him. So, if that happens, we could be saying goodbye to Gakpo."

Whatever happens to Cody Gakpo could change Liverpool's summer transfer plans

Most people expected Gakpo to be a part of Liverpool's plans for at least the next couple of years.

The attacker has only just signed a long-term deal with the club worth around £250,000-per-week which many people thought would keep him at Anfield.

But, since he was certainly not the player he used to be last season, it's not hard to understand why the Reds could entertain the idea of moving him on.

Although getting rid of the Gakpo could bring in around £60 million, it would mean that yet another attacker would need to be targeted after Yan Diomande.

And, since the prices of the transfer market are extremely high at the moment, it's unclear what sort of player Liverpool would be able to target to replace him.

So, as much as selling Gakpo would take a huge chunk out of Liverpool's wage bill, the pros and cons of the deal need to be weighed up, especially now Andoni Iraola is at the helm rather than Slot.
