Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz was expected to help transform their team.

The 22-year-old was brought in to replace the creative spark that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz took with them when they chose to exit Anfield.

Indeed, the £116 million fee was seen as expensive but, after his performances in the Bundesliga, most fans thought he'd hit the ground running and give the Reds exactly what they needed.

This has obviously been far from the case with the midfielder only scoring seven goals and assisting his teammates on 10 occasions.

Wirtz's poor form has led to exit links emerging with Chelsea among the main contenders looking to sign him.

And now that the summer transfer window is upon us, an update has finally been shared on his future.

Fabrizio Romano confirms that Florian Wirtz will stay at Liverpool

Even though it feels like the transfer of Wirtz has flopped, the fact that Arne Slot used him in six different positions this season probably didn't help matters much.

The 22-year-old is a natural number 10 with his keen eye for a pass and the goal among some of the best attributes he brings to his team.

When playing for Germany, these qualities often shine through and, with a new manager coming in next season, the Reds' fans will be hoping to see a brand-new version of the German.

That is, especially now that Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Wirtz will be staying at Liverpool this summer.

"No, Florian Wirtz is not leaving Liverpool this summer," he said via his YouTube Channel.

"The relationship between Xabi Alonso and Florian Wirtz is excellent, of course.

"They won together and had a fantastic time together at Bayer Leverkusen, but that’s it. So, there is no negotiations, no talks.

"Chelsea are not looking for that kind of player, and also it’s important to mention that Florian Wirtz remains an important part of Liverpool’s squad.

"Liverpool absolutely believe in Florian Wirtz. They believe that next season could be his season in red, so absolutely no movements around Florian Wirtz.

"Forget about those links coming from England."

Liverpool's next manager must get the best out of Florian Wirtz if they want to win trophies

Last summer, Richard Hughes and Slot spent over Β£240 million on Alexander Isak and Wirtz.

The duo were expected to completely transform Liverpool and put them on course to retain the Premier League title.

This was not the case and now, fans are questioning whether the duo were even worth the Reds spending most of their transfer budget on.

However, now that Slot is gone and a new manager is about to take over, things may start to go in Liverpool's favour, especially if they play an attacking-style of football.

Wirtz's versatility is one of the best things about him but, if the Reds' next manager can use him in his natural position, they'll probably get much better results and perhaps even get them closer to winning the Champions League.

Of course, all of this depends on the 2026-27 summer transfer window because, if the Anfield outfit don't have an inspiring window, they could end up even worse off than they currently find themselves which would be a huge fall from grace.
