Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool signed a deal early on Friday morning. A massive one.

Liverpool are busy locking in their squad for next season and reports broke on Thursday that Dominik Szoboszlai was a major part of that. The Reds have been eager to sign him to a new contract for quite some time.

Szoboszlai was reported to have verbally agreed a new deal with the Reds and would be signing it imminently.

Anfield Watch were first to the story on the UK side as his entourage flew in to sign the deal. The contract is expected to be until 2031 and makes Szoboszlai one of the highest-paid midfielders in world football.

Fabrizio Romano now reports that the deal is done and signed, claiming it happened early on Friday morning. Anfield Watch actually understands it was signed on Thursday evening - but that’s a technicality at this stage.

The big news is that Szoboszlai is locked in as a Liverpool player, ending speculation that he could run his contract down to join Real Madrid. That’s speculation which refused to go away in recent years and given what happened with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate, it was a worry.

Instead, the Hungary captain will be a key part of Liverpool moving forward. He joins Ryan Gravenberch in tying his long-term future to the club, with what are essentially the prime years of his career.

It’s a deal Liverpool were desperate to do, especially after losing a few key players over the last 18 months. A win that felt necessary and absolutely deserves celebrating.

Of course, it’s not entirely clear where Szoboszlai will line up next season. Andoni Iraola’s arrival means it’s all up in the air - though, we can’t imagine he’ll be as regular at right-back as he was under Arne Slot.

All we know for sure is that Szoboszlai will be someone Iraola can rely on.
