The club's dream target has always been Alexander Isak. This is the player Liverpool have identified as the perfect next step to lead Arne Slot's evolution at Anfield.
At 25-years-old, Isak is in the prime of his life. He's a proven goal-scorer who can take Liverpool to an even higher level than last season.
This is why Liverpool have been so keen on signing him. And it's also why Newcastle United have been so reluctant to sell him. They know the asset they are holding is a special one.
However, it's becoming increasingly likely that they cannot hold on to him forever.
This has been made clear by The Athletic, who report that Isak has made his intentions clear to never play for Newcastle again, even if he stays at the club this summer.
Isak has been training separately from the rest of his teammates on Tyneside and it's clear he wants the move to Liverpool.
Newcastle remain reluctant to facilitate this. They have struggled to find replacements for the Swedish talisman and they are yet to accept his departure from the club.
The more Isak pushes, the more that acceptance will come. It's already looking like an untenable situation for Newcastle. They simply cannot keep a player who is so dissatisfied with staying at the club.
The question remains what Liverpool will do now. They want this deal to happen but so far there has been no encouragement from Newcastle that they would be even willing to listen to the Reds' offer.
There was a £110m offer that was promptly rejected and so far Liverpool have no engaged in any discussions with the Magpies.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano that could change.
Writing on his X account, Romano has claimed that Liverpool will bid again for Alexander Isak. This is the next step for the Reds and they are ready to make it.
It all just depends on Newcastle's stance. The club has to open the doors for Isak's exit.
