Al-Hilal have reportedly been purchased by Saudi royal Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. He’s a fan of the club and intends to up their investment.

That deal should be announced later today in what’s a massive shakeup for Saudi Arabia’s biggest club. And that shakeup includes a deal for Hughes, who will leave Liverpool early.

Hughes’s contract runs until 2027 but it appears he’s ready to call it quits now. That’s a dramatic change for the Reds, who only hired him two years ago to oversee the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

It means that Arne Slot is ‘his’ man - something made very clear in a roundtable put out by the club earlier this season. However, with Slot under immense pressure, it appears Hughes is ready to jump ship.

Richard Hughes: Situation Summary

Strategic Planning and Recruitment at Liverpool

As of 16 April 2026, Liverpool’s Sporting Director, Richard Hughes, is navigating a pivotal period in the club's modern history. Working closely with Michael Edwards, Hughes has been tasked with managing a significant squad transition, primarily overseeing the confirmed free-agent departures of club icons Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Hughes has been proactive in the market, having already secured deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to refresh the squad's core. However, he faces mounting pressure to address the future of the managerial position, with current head coach Arne Slot under fire and Xabi Alonso heavily linked as a potential successor for the 2026–2027 campaign.

Contract Negotiations and Summer Targets

Beyond the high-profile exits, Hughes is currently locked in delicate contract talks with key senior figures like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are entering the final stages of their current deals. His recruitment strategy for the upcoming summer window appears focused on versatility and youth; targets such as Oscar Mingueza and Bazoumana Touré are reportedly high on his shortlist to replace outgoing veterans. Hughes has also been credited with maintaining a firm stance on the club’s valuation of internal talent, notably blocking significant interest from Inter Milan for Curtis Jones. The success of this upcoming window is viewed as a defining test for Hughes as he attempts to maintain Liverpool's competitive edge during a period of structural change.
