Arne Slot must back incredible new Liverpool partnership for crunch PSG clash
Arne Slot must back an incredible new partnership at Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain. It's time to take a chance.
Liverpool face an uphill battle to get past Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield to say the least. The Reds have never been favourites for this tie anyway, let alone after falling 2-0 in France.
They now must overturn that deficit at home against arguably the best team in Europe. The reigning champions. The team that beat them 1-0 at Anfield just last season.
We feel it's time to take a chance and that means doing something Arne Slot has been reluctant to this season: gamble on Rio Ngumoha. The winger has had a positive impact every time he's played for Liverpool this season, injecting that one-v-one play that they lack, as well as an unpredictability.
That's what they certainly didn't have in Paris last week but it feels like the magic ingredient for the return leg. Liverpool need at least two goals, after all, and a repeat of their stagnant display won't bring them what they need.
Ngumoha might be someone who can help but in doing so, Andy Robertson must start, too. The pair have a partnership that could massively help on Tuesday.
That partnership has been deliberately built, too. Slot has clearly opted for the Scot to play behind Ngumoha virtually every time the latter has been picked - something that continued against Fulham at the weekend.
It's a clever idea. Put a wealth of experience behind the teenager and someone who knows how to bring balance behind a very attacking winger. Milos Kerkez doesn't have that experience and balance - playing him behind Ngumoha is a massive risk in big games.
Against PSG, we think Robertson and Ngumoha should be the left flank. They can ride the momentum from Saturday while offering the winger's unpredictable nature and the full-backs European know-how.
It just makes sense for a must-win match.
Andy Robertson: Situation Summary
Departure Confirmation and Legacy
Liverpool officially confirmed on April 9, 2026, that Andy Robertson will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer. The 32-year-old vice-captain will leave as a club legend after a nine-year tenure that saw him win nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Robertson joins Mohamed Salah in a high-profile free agent exodus as the club continues its rebuilding phase. Over 373 appearances, the Scotsman recorded 13 goals and 69 assists, becoming a cornerstone of the most successful era in the club's modern history. He received a poignant standing ovation during a lap of honour following Liverpool's 2-0 win over Fulham on April 11.
Current Season and Future Destination
During the 2025-2026 campaign, Robertson’s role transitioned from an automatic starter to a vital squad player following the emergence of Milos Kerkez. Despite the reduced minutes, he has made 31 appearances this season, contributing two goals and two assists, including a strike against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Robertson cited a desire for more regular first-team football as a primary reason for his exit, noting that while discussions occurred, no official contract offer was made. Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as the frontrunner for his signature, though Napoli, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid are also reportedly keen. He remains fully focused on Liverpool’s remaining fixtures, including a crucial Champions League return leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
