Andoni Iraola can save Liverpool £52m by doing one thing

Andoni Iraola has been given a bit of a bad hand after taking over from Arne Slot at Liverpool.

The Spaniard may have left Bournemouth to seek out a new challenge and, although going from the Vitality to Anfield is a massive step-up, the Reds' team is much more broken than Bournemouth's.

They spent an obscene amount of money trying to upgrade their ranks last summer and, on paper, all of their moves made sense but, due to how many changes occurred at once, there was no cohesion.

This resulted in a rather broken Liverpool team that finished in fifth with several new players needed to get them on the same level as their title rivals.

But, since so many changes need to be made this summer, every penny counts and, wherever Iraola can save a decent chunk of change, he needs to take that opportunity and run.

Andoni Iraola should give Joe Gomez a chance to prove his worth

Joe Gomez is Liverpool's longest-serving player.

The defender has been with the club since the 2015/16 season after joining from Charlton.

Although it took him a while to regularly feature for the Reds, when he finally got given a string of games, he quickly became one of the Premier League's best defenders.

But, just when he was solidifying his place in Liverpool's starting XI, his terrible run of injuries occurred and, since then, he's never been the same player.

At least once every couple of months the centre-back seems to have an extended spell on the sidelines but, with Ibrahima Konate gone and only Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet left as the Reds' other centre-back options, now could be Gomez's time to shine.

The defender is 29 years old and, although his injury history is a tad worrying, now feels like the best time for him to prove his worth and for him to be given a chance to start for Iraola's men.

Many other centre-backs have already been linked with a Liverpool switch but, with Jan Paul van Hecke joining Tottenham for around £52 million, using Gomez instead of signing a new partner for Virgil van Dijk could be the best thing for them.

That ism especially with how many other areas of their team still need to be upgraded.

Liverpool have plenty of time to sign a new centre-back if they become desperate

With how many centre-backs Liverpool have already been linked with, it's clear that they have plenty of time to weigh their options up.

And, if Gomez does end up getting injured in pre-season, they could easily turn their attention towards a new target to take up that starting role.

But, since Iraola is the new kid in town and will want to weigh up the talents of every player, now feels like the best time for Gomez to be given a chance.

The Englishman clearly still has a lot of talent in his locker with AC Milan more than likely to re-ignite their interest in the defender once again.

So, if they do that and Liverpool don't want to keep him, he has an easy way out but, if given the option, he'd probably prefer staying at Anfield and fighting for a role in Iraola's plans.

His versatility is also something that can't be frowned upon as, there aren't all that many players in the world who can comfortably play anywhere across the back four.

Things like that are invaluable and, since AC Milan won't want to fork out much money for him, keeping Gomez in L4 is clearly the best move, especially if they want a Premier League proven centre-back to fill in the gap left behind by Konate.
