Liverpool transfer news: 4 players who could leave this month

Here are four players who could leave Liverpool in the January transfer window. Three more could agree moves away from the club.

The January transfer window is now open and Liverpool could well use it to offload four players. Three of them are particularly interesting - the Reds already moved them on in the summer.

But a series of failed loan spells have seen players return to Anfield. They'll now hope to find more successful spells elsewhere - either permanently or on loan again.

Nat Phillips

Nat Phillips has had a bizarre career at this point. He left Bolton Wanderers' academy and was about to quit professional football before Liverpool made him an offer. He spent time at Stuttgart on loan in the Bundesliga 2. before becoming a hero for the Reds in their injury-plagued 2020/21 season.

That was supposed to be a breakout campaign for Phillips but he hasn't kicked on. A bright loan with Bournemouth brought promise, only for him to then spend most of his time languishing in reserve for Liverpool.

A loan to Celtic this season looked like his big opportunity to establish himself again. Instead, it's been cut short and there's every expectation that he finds a new loan this month. Or, perhaps, a sale.

Rhys Williams

Like Phillips, Rhys Williams exploded onto the scene in 2020/21 as he came to the rescue for Liverpool. But he's found it tough ever since, with loan spells at Swansea City and Blackpool leading to little.

This season he went to Aberdeen but it was a disaster of a deal. Williams played just once over the first half of the season and Liverpool have cut the loan short. Again like Phillips, it's unclear where things go from here.

Williams will almost certainly depart on loan again but the Reds will surely listen to all offers.

Fabio Carvalho

Make that three failed loan spells. Fabio Carvalho is slightly different to the other two, however, in that he's unquestionably a player with massive potential. His efforts for Fulham in their promotion season were fantastic - and proved to everyone that he's a potential star.

But RB Leipzig couldn't get it out of him. Carvalho barely featured, playing 135 minutes in the Bundesliga across the first half of the season, sparking Liverpool to recall a third player.

Another loan will almost certainly happen now - and it might well be back to Fulham.

Bobby Clark

Bobby Clark is a player right on the fringes of Liverpool's first-team squad. So much so, in fact, that the Reds rejected an offer from Derby County so Jurgen Klopp could include him in and around the squad.

However, Clark has battled injuries since and hasn't played since October. He's still not quite back and when he is, it's unlikely that he'll feature at first-team level. Not as the games get bigger and the team feels more established.

And as we know there's interest in him, Liverpool could well believe that the time is right to send him on loan.

Pre-contracts

Liverpool also have three players in the squad who could agree pre-contracts with other clubs from the start of this transfer window. That's because their current contracts expire at the end of the season and clubs outside of England can offer them deals from January 1st.

Of course, none of them would leave until the summer but they can agree deals away.

Thiago is the headline player there - though, he hasn't played at all this season. It certainly feels as though he'll be leaving at the end of the campaign but who knows what the next few months hold?

Joel Matip is also free to talk with other clubs. However, he's currently out with an ACL injury that will likely sideline him for the entire season. That makes it highly unlikely that anyone - even Liverpool - move in with an offer until the summer.

Adrian is the other. Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper, he almost certainly departs. Marcelo Pitaluga is ready to take over that role and Adrian doesn't have much reason to be a fourth-choice.
