‘Important’ Liverpool star is finished at Anfield after latest €50m transfer news

Liverpool still have a lot of changes to make to their team if they want to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Indeed, Andoni Iraola's main goal this term will be to qualify for the Champions League again but, if he can bring some sort of silverware back to Anfield, that would be seen as a huge success for his first season in charge.

The Spaniard is obviously taking a massive step-up from Bournemouth to Liverpool but, after he over-delivered with the Cherries last term it feels like he's more than ready for the challenge.

Of course, if Richard Hughes doesn't get some deals for new players through the door then they could end up struggling.

But, after the latest transfer news to emerge from Germany, one Liverpool player is almost certainly finished in L4.

One main area that Liverpool need to upgrade is their defence.

Virgil van Dijk is 35 years old and Liverpool only have four senior centre-backs among their ranks which, with how gruelling a season of football is these days, is a rather worrying thought.

And, since the Reds have had no luck with injuries, going into the 2026-27 season with a lack of depth feels like a huge mistake.

That's why most of the players Liverpool have been linked with this summer have been defenders with a fresh report from Caught Offside now detailing that Borussia Dortmund left-back Daniel Svensson is on the Reds' radar.

Although Svensson probably isn't a player that most Liverpool fans will have heard of, the fact that their club are being linked with a new left-back means that Iraola clearly isn't happy with the options he has at his disposal at the moment.

Kostas Tsimikas was expected to be the Reds' back-up left-back this term but, since he hardly played for AS Roma during the 2025-26 campaign, it's unclear whether he'll still have what it takes to be a Premier League level full-back.

Indeed, his playing style is very similar to Milos Kerkez's but, it feels like it would be too much of an ask for him to back-up the Hungarian.

They finished fifth in the table and they even lost both of their top-flight games against Manchester United which is something that hasn't happened for a long time.

And, without improving their ranks, especially their defence, there's no way that they'll be able to get back to the top.

So, by getting rid of Tsimikas, therefore finishing his Liverpool career, the Reds would be well on their way towards the Premier League title.

Indeed, they could keep the "important" defender around if they wanted to but, since a deal for Svensson could be on this summer, it feels like they should explore that before making any final decisions on the future of the 29-year-old.
