World-class talent: Andoni Iraola will make a star out of £30m wonderkid at Liverpool
Andoni Iraola is exactly what Liverpool needed. He's going to make a star out of their £30m wonderkid.
In truth, Liverpool will hope Andoni Iraola can make all of their 2025 summer signings look like superstars. The Reds dropped over £400m on new players but none of them looked like value for money across their debut campaigns.
So the change of head coach brings renewed hope. Milos Kerkez is the most obvious example, having already played under Iraola. Florian Wirtz, too, should benefit from a quicker style of play that tries to get him the ball high up the pitch in space.
But there's quietly another signing who could massively benefit here: Giovanni Leoni. The Italian joined Liverpool from Parma last summer but was badly injured on his debut, ending his season prematurely.
He'll return in the next campaign and waiting for him is a head coach who loves his profile.
Leoni was signed as a wonderkid centre-back who's solid defensively and unusually comfortable on the ball. Liverpool hope he can develop into a magnificent possession player as well as a defender and now they have the right coach to achieve that.
Just look, for instance, at what Iraola did with Marcos Senesi. The Argentine lacks pace and shouldn't, on paper, be a great Premier League centre-back.
But the fact he's solid on the ball made him an extraordinary weapon for Bournemouth. He was the best passing centre-back in England last season, creating chances galore from the back.
That's the kind of role Liverpool will dream of for Leoni. Someone who can take the pressure off midfield and create from the back - the tools are there to do it.
Senesi is the blueprint, then, but Leoni has the talent to far exceed him. We're talking 'world's best' sort of talent and we fully expect him to play regularly once he returns to fitness.
Giovanni Leoni: Situation Summary
Liverpool Campaign and Stats
As of 5 June 2026, Giovanni Leoni has concluded a largely difficult debut domestic campaign with Liverpool. The 19-year-old Italian centre-back, signed from Parma in August 2025, found regular first-team opportunities limited due to a combination of competition for places and a severe knee injury sustained in September 2025. Leoni made just one competitive appearance for the Reds, starting in a 2–1 League Cup victory against Southampton on 23 September. He has spent the majority of the subsequent months undergoing an intensive rehabilitation programme at the club’s training ground to ensure a full recovery ahead of next season.
Future Outlook and Anfield Development
Despite a season hampered by long-term injury, Leoni remains highly regarded by Liverpool’s coaching staff as a key long-term defensive prospect. Having successfully returned to fitness, he is expected to integrate into full pre-season training this July. With the club preparing for a defensive overhaul this summer following the departure of senior figures, Leoni is set to compete for a more consistent role within the first-team squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
