Liverpool's coaching staff are impressed with one wonderkid. An enormous impact is on the way.

Liverpool's coaching staff reportedly like what they see from Giovanni Leoni. That's despite him being injured for months now.

Leoni was a summer signing but one who will have to wait a while longer before making an impact. The Italian became Liverpool's most expensive teenage transfer - but blew out his knee on debut, ruling him out for the season.

Hopefully, Leoni can get back on the pitch in pre-season and make an impact next season. It seems he's already finding ways to catch the eye, though.

The Daily Mail reports that he's made a 'huge impression' on the coaching staff with his gym work. There's a suggestion here that he's got the work ethic Liverpool wanted to see and he's able to show it even when unable to contribute.

Giovanni Leoni: Situation Summary

Transfer and Initial Impact

The 19-year-old Italian centre-back joined Liverpool from Parma in August 2025 for a reported fee of €35 million (£30 million). Viewed as one of Europe’s most promising defensive prospects, Leoni had earlier been shortlisted for the 2025 Golden Boy Award. He made his competitive debut on 23 September 2025, starting in a 2-1 League Cup victory against Southampton. However, his debut was cut short in the 81st minute when he was stretchered off with what was later confirmed to be a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Injury Status and Rehabilitation

The ACL injury has sidelined Leoni for the vast majority of the 2025/26 campaign. Arne Slot confirmed in late 2025 that the defender would likely be out for "around a year," effectively ending his hopes of a breakthrough season or a place in Italy’s 2026 World Cup squad. Recent updates from the AXA Training Centre indicate that while Leoni is not yet back training on grass, he has impressed staff with his dedication to gym-based rehabilitation. The club is tentatively targeting a return to full training in September 2026, though he remains under the close supervision of the medical team to avoid any setbacks.

Future Outlook and Squad Role

Despite the injury, Liverpool remain committed to Leoni as a long-term fixture in their defence, with the player under contract until June 2031. He has already settled well in England, with reports noting his strong command of the language and positive integration into the squad’s social circles. While there has been media speculation regarding a potential loan return to Serie A—with Inter Milan reportedly interested in a temporary deal for the 2026/27 season—Liverpool’s current priority is his physical recovery. He is expected to compete for a place in the rotation alongside Virgil van Dijk and the incoming Jérémy Jacquet once he returns to full fitness.

Giovanni Leoni's future

Leoni should be able to play regularly next season, assuming his recovery goes well. And that immediately makes him a key option for Liverpool.

Joe Gomez is expected to leave, while Ibrahima Konate could depart, too. It leaves Leoni alongside Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet as the only real guarantees for next season.

But even if Liverpool do sign another centre-back, his future is locked in. Liverpool want Leoni to partner Jacquet long-term - two of the very best young defenders in Europe.

As long as that recovery goes as planned, there’s nothing stopping him from being the force Liverpool dreamed him to be.
