All signs point towards the Reds embarking on another recruitment drive too, with a deal for Jeremy Jacquet already announced and multiple players being heavily linked with an Anfield switch.

Reinforcements are needed throughout the squad, but for many the midfield is the priority.

Now, the Reds will have the chance to sign a World Cup winning midfielder they’ve wanted for years but they will face some tough competition.

Liverpool need to battle Man City, Real Madrid & PSG for €90m star

In the final few years of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Anfield, Liverpool missed out on a number of massive midfield targets before eventually successfully rebuilding their midfield in the summer of 2023.

Jude Bellingham, Moises Caicedo and Aurelien Tchouameni were among the names linked with a Merseyside move, but arguably the most exciting was Enzo Fernandez.

The hype around the Argentine heading into the 2022 World Cup was immense, and Liverpool were reportedly well in the race to sign him before he made his move to Chelsea.

Now, Fernandez has said his goodbyes at Chelsea and will be on the move this summer.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Manchester City are high on the list of potential suitors, with new boss Enzo Maresca ‘desperate’ to sign his former midfielder.

PSG and Real Madrid are also in the race, but Liverpool haven’t been directly linked yet.

The Reds should absolutely be trying again for Fernandez, who is valued at €91.3 million (~£80m) by FootballTransfers.

The 25-year-old has just enjoyed one of his most prolific seasons, scoring 15 and assisting seven, and he would be a very welcome addition to Slot’s side.

With plenty of speculation over the future of Fernandez’s compatriot Alexis Mac Allister, Liverpool should look to enter the race for Chelsea’s wantaway star before other teams get too far ahead.

Fernandez is a ready-made player who could slot in seamlessly and instantly make the Reds better, so sitting this one out would be a big mistake from Richard Hughes.
