Liverpool have been through several sporting directors over the last six years with varying success.

Everyone who has taken charge of the Anfield recruitment team has had some success, but the almost constant turnover at the top has limited long-term planning.

Julian Ward is now once again at the helm, and he has already started to implement his vision for the future.

Liverpool appear to be doubling down on the one strategy that has persisted across multiple sporting directors, buying the best young players from across the world.

Jeremy Jacquet is an excellent example of this strategy in action, and Ward is reportedly looking to bring another superstar teenager to Anfield.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Gilberto Mora

Rio Ngumoha, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Trey Nyoni are some more examples of youth players that the Reds have signed that looked destined to be first-team stars if they aren’t already.

The next player lined up to join Liverpool appears to be Gilberto Mora, with the 20-time Premier League champions already in contact to sign the Mexican sensation.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Reds are the ‘leading contender’ among English clubs in the race for the 17-year-old, with the club already in direct contact with the teenager’s representatives.

Mora would be an exciting signing for the Anfield faithful, but the Reds’ interest alone is reason to be excited.

Ward is continuing the approach taken by his predecessor and going after the best young talents available, a strategy that has turned Liverpool into one of the most appealing options for any young player.

By continuing to use the existing framework in Liverpool’s recruitment team, Ward can rebuild the Reds as a team that signs high-potential players for reasonable fees and not the big spending machine it has become over the last 18-months.

The club became the first to field three players who cost more than £100 million this season, and Ward’s challenge is to find the balance between eye-watering sums for supposed ‘world class’ players and smart deals for young superstars like Mora.

Even if a deal for Mora doesn’t get over the line, Ward is proving he is the right man for the job at Liverpool by pursuing the teenage sensation.
