A Liverpool cult hero is leaving the club.

Liverpool are entering a new phase at Anfield, with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards already beginning to shape the club’s long-term direction in a noticeable way.

Their influence was particularly evident in last summer’s transfer window, which signalled the start of a broader rebuild rather than a short-term reset. Several established figures from the successful Jurgen Klopp era were moved on, marking a clear transition away from a squad that had defined the club’s success over the previous decade.

In their place, Liverpool brought in a new wave of younger, high-upside players, underlining a deliberate shift towards youth development and long-term squad planning. The recruitment model has become increasingly structured and forward-looking.

Aside from the arrivals of Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong, the vast majority of signings have been under the age of 23. Even those two additions still align with a long-term project, with both in their mid-20s and entering what should be their peak years.

That strategy is expected to continue into the summer ahead, with players such as Adam Wharton and Yan Diomande already being strongly linked as potential targets in Liverpool’s evolving recruitment blueprint.

It is increasingly clear that Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards are operating with a long-term perspective that extends well beyond the current season.

Their approach is centred on building the structure for sustained success over several years, rather than focusing solely on immediate short-term gains. The aim is to construct the next great Liverpool side in a measured, strategic way, rather than attempting a quick rebuild.

Reaching that level again after the end of the Jürgen Klopp era will take time, but the direction of travel is becoming increasingly clear. Liverpool are planning carefully for a full-cycle squad evolution.

As part of that transition, change among the senior group is unavoidable. The summer has already seen emotional farewells to long-serving figures such as Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté and Andrew Robertson, signalling the beginning of a broader reshaping of the squad.

And they are unlikely to be the only experienced names to move on. Players including Joe Gomez, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones also have uncertain futures hanging over them as Liverpool continue to assess their next steps.

All of this reflects a clear changing of the guard at Anfield. Within the space of around a year, the squad is set to be significantly reshaped as a new era takes hold.

And these changes are not limited to the first team either, with substantial restructuring also expected at U21 level as Liverpool overhaul the pathway from academy to senior football.

Liverpool confirmed on Tuesday evening that there will be several players leaving the club on a free transfer.

According to the club's statement among these players will be a cult hero at Anfield in Oakley Cannonier.

The youngster was a top-goal scorer at U18 level, and made 38 goal contributions in 37 matches for Liverpool. However several serious injuries curtailed his career.

It means he was never able to make the step-up to U21 level and really make his mark on the team. He also could not really get close to the first-team, although did train sporadically with the senior side - even as early as during last season while Arne Slot was in charge.

Now 22-years-old, he leaves as a free agent but he will leave as a cult hero. Not for what he did on the pitch but for what Cannonier did off it.

He was the ball boy who passed the ball over to Trent Alexander-Arnold during that famous 'corner taken quickly' against Barcelona to complete Liverpool's 4-0 rout and remarkable comeback.

For that alone, he will always be remembered fondly at Anfield.
