This is a surprise, Liverpool captain announces he's leaving
Another leader is leaving Liverpool in what is a surprise.
The reds are entering a new chapter at Anfield, with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards beginning to leave a clear mark on the club’s direction.
Their influence was especially visible during the summer transfer window last year, where major changes signaled the start of a long-term rebuild rather than a short-term fix.
Several players who had become central figures under Jurgen Klopp were moved on, marking the end of an era for a squad that delivered huge success over the last decade. I
n their place, Liverpool brought in a wave of fresh talent, highlighting a deliberate shift toward youth and long-term development.
The club’s recruitment strategy has been clear.
Aside from Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong, nearly every signing has been under the age of 23. Even Isak and Frimpong themselves still fit comfortably within a long-term project at 26 and 25 years old respectively, with both players entering what should be the prime years of their careers.
And that's set to continue looking ahead to this summer with players like Adam Wharton and Yan Diomande being strongly linked with moves.
It's clear Hughes and Edwards are thinking beyond just the current campaign.
Their vision is focused on building the foundations for sustained success over many years rather than chasing immediate results alone.
Creating another dominant Liverpool side will not happen overnight, particularly after the end of Klopp’s reign, but the strategy now in place suggests the club is planning carefully for the future.
For this refresh a lot of the old guard also have to leave the club.
It's why this weekend Liverpool said their goodbyes to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
The chances are they probably won't be the only experienced players to leave. Joe Gomez, Alisson Becker, Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones all have clouds hanging over their futures.
This is the changing of the guard at Anfield. In the space of 12 months, we will have seen Liverpool completely transformed.
But it's not just at first-team level that these changes are going to be happening, there are wholesale changes at U21 level.
Liverpool are bringing in some of the best young talents in world football. Armin Pecsi, who was one of the few goalkeepers nominated for the Golden Ball last year.
Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye were signed from the U17 World Cup and are expected to form the backline for the U21s next season.
Samuel Martinez will be joining Liverpool from Colombia next year. Meanwhile Sidy Barhama Ndiaye is also expected to join the Reds from Senegal when he celebrates his 18th birthday.
But as always, with new arrivals also come inevitable departures.
And it looks like Liverpool's U21 side will be saying goodbye to a lot of experienced players as well. Among them, in a surprise move, Terence Miles will be leaving.
Miles is a Welsh youth international and he's the captain of the Reds' U21 side. He's been at Liverpool for 14 years. But after such a long time the club, Miles has announced on his Instagram page that he will be leaving the club.
Letting a player of Miles' quality leave on a free transfer is a huge surprise. He's 21-years-old and he was once regarded as a sensation within the academy.
He would have deserved an extension and a loan spell rather than leaving for pastures new. But this is what Liverpool have decided and it hints at big changes coming.
