Steven Gerrard sends CLEAR message to Arne Slot and Liverpool's board
Despite winning the Premier League in his maiden season, Arne Slot’s job has never looked less secure at Anfield.
Less than 12 months after a historic title win, it looks as though time could be running out for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
The Reds experienced their worst run of form in recent history in October and November, losing nine in 12.
Slot’s side are currently unbeaten in 12, but performances in that time have left plenty to be desired and Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield only added fuel to the flames.
Steven Gerrard, arguably the most iconic figure in Liverpool’s history, sent a clear message to Slot and the board after the draw, and it is clear the Anfield legend isn’t happy.
Steven Gerrard brands Slot’s results as ‘unacceptable’
Although unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League matches, Liverpool have now drawn their last four in the competition.
Two of those draws have come against newly promoted teams at Anfield.
Speaking to TNT Sports following Saturday’s draw, Gerrard said: “Draws to the likes of Leeds and Burnley at home, you know and I know that’s not acceptable.
“There will be a lot of criticism that comes the manager’s way again.”
The legendary former captain did also praise Slot for getting his side back into the top four of the league, but Gerrard was clear that Liverpool’s current run won’t be enough to stop the criticism aimed at the head coach.
Who could replace Slot at Anfield?
The immense pressure on the Dutchman’s job has unsurprisingly led to plenty of speculation over who could be Liverpool’s next manager.
Gerrard himself is one of the most spoken about names, although his appointment would likely only be on a temporary basis.
Xabi Alonso’s recent departure from Real Madrid has also caused a stir among the Anfield faithful, with Gerrard even liking an Instagram post by user _maxwaves discussing Alonso being appointed as Liverpool’s next coach.
The video also discussed Luis Enrique as a possible option for the Reds.
Slot could still turn it around with Liverpool, but Gerrard’s message to the Dutchman and his superiors is clear. Liverpool must improve and that improvement must come soon.
