Star's Liverpool career could be done after 'absurd' mistake
Liverpool's reputation for developing young talent is something the club can be truly proud of.
The Kirkby academy is one of the best in the world, and the Reds have had several world class talents pass through their youth ranks.
Some of the most successful players to break through into the Liverpool first-team didn't progress all the way through the youth ranks but were instead signed to the academy from rival clubs.
One such example is Harvey Elliott, who was signed as a teenager and went on to make 149 appearances for the Reds before his time at Anfield came to an end.
An unsuccessful loan spell at Aston Villa last season caused Elliott's career to stagnate, and now the Englishman is making headlines once again.
Harvey Elliott embroiled in red card controversy
After his dire loan spell in the West Midlands last campaign, hopes were high that a season on loan with Valencia in La Liga could get Elliott's career back on track.
The 23-year-old has struggled to settle into life in Spain however, and has been the subject of plenty of criticism from the local media.
Things went from bad to worse for Elliott on Saturday, when he received two yellow cards within a minute of each other, being sent off less than 20 minutes after being substituted on.
The sending off marked a real low point for Elliott, and Valencia boss Javier Aguirre has made his feelings on this situation known.
"Harvey Elliott's sending off is absurd, ridiculous. I've already let him know that," Aguirre told the Spanish press after the match. "It’s not his fault, it’s my fault for putting out the players I do. I decide who and how they play. I’ll talk to him."
The comments from his manager are pretty damning, and it feels like Elliott could remain out of the team even after his suspension has been served.
With things already not going well for the 23-year-old in Spain, it could be beneficial for all parties to call his loan move off six months early when the January window opens.
For many, this current spell in Spain was Elliott's last chance to save his Liverpool career, and an early return could signal the permanent end of the Englishman's time in Merseyside.
