Slot Reportedly After January Defensive Cover

Following on from Jurgen Klopp's final year in charge of Liverpool where he oversaw last season's phenomenal Premier League campaign, and the lifting of No 20, Arne Slot's first season in charge at Anfield has been a huge disappointment so far.

The frustration and disappointment has been even more acute particularly in light of the players that we have brought in and our incredible spending during the summer transfer window, as we have seen a raft of selection changes tat did not overly appear to have much of a plan behind them when it came to newbies settling in, striking up understandings and properly adjusting to what our Dutch gaffer wanted from them.

Performances and results so far in the 2025/26 campaign have obviously suffered from the lack of cohesion and understanding in the group but having now entered the New Year and the second half of the campaign we are still in fourth spot in the table, Champions League qualification remains in our hands and we are now on a decent unbeaten run.

It may not have been the campaign that anyone would have wanted, certainly not those fans who browse comparison websites like AskGamblers for the best odds and offers available, but it is what it is and now that it seems that we have better foundations in place, there is good reason to look forward with optimism and it seems that we will again be busy in the January transfer window.

Whilst most eyes were understandably on Sunday's clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage, it was being reported that we could be a matter of days away from capturing £43 million rated Club Brugge youngster Joel Ordonez.

The 21 year old 14 capped Ecuadorian international centre half has again been impressive this year and has now racked up 67 league appearances for the Belgian Pro League side having joined them back in 2023. It was originally believed that he was being chased by Chelsea and would be the next name to be added to their bloated bomb squad of acquisitions, but they have reportedly decided against progressing a deal this month.

It should be noted that other reports claim that we are only actively scouting him as a potential option right now and that no firm talks have taken place as we are yet to make our minds up on bringing him in, but he could well be a name to remember as deadline day begins to near again. After all, it was well known that Slot was hoping to add further defensive cover to our ranks with the move for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi but that fell down in the final hours as Palace could not secure a replacement.

Given our defensive issues this season seeing extra cover come in would not overly be a surprise, but that kind of money on a relative unknown given he would require his own adjustment period to the team and the country makes this one feel unlikely right now. But again, a name to remember maybe depending on what else we might have planned and in progress.
