Richard Hughes ready to sign Euro winner
Liverpool's defence has taken a serious beating on more than one occasion this season.
Ibrahima Konate has put in some of his worst-ever performances for the Anfield outfit with Virgil van Dijk also failing to remain consistent.
Indeed, Giovanni Leoni's ACL tear hasn't helped matters all that much but the fact that others such as Joe Gomez have rarely been used has certainly raised some questions.
The Reds' lack of form has caused several players to be linked with an Anfield switch with most of the rumours centralising around new centre-backs.
Players such as Marc Guehi, Joel Ordonez and Dayot Upamecano have all been linked with an Anfield switch but now, a new name has entered the fray.
Liverpool are in a three-horse race for Charlie Cresswell
Liverpool's centre-backs have been a regular topic of conversation over the last couple of years.
Most of the questions have been about who's likely to replace Van Dijk in the future, however, recently, things have just turned sour.
The transfer of Guehi to Liverpool was expected in the summer but when that deal fell through, everything was thrown into the air.
And now, as per a fresh report from French outlet Sport, Tolouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell is now on the Reds' radar.
The report starts out by saying that Liverpool are now 'closely monitoring' the Englishman with Newcastle also vying for his transfer.
Cresswell has established himself as an 'indispensable player' with his qualities 'highly sought after.'
Manchester City have also 'expressed interest' in the 23-year-old with Tolouse wanting at around Β£21.6 million to prise him away from them.
The centre-back was also part of England's Under-21 team who won the Euros last summer.
Liverpool have several centre-back options to choose from in January
Liverpool may have ruled themselves out of the race for Ordonez already but that doesn't mean that they're not eyeing other centre-backs to bolster their ranks.
Cresswell is seemingly one of the newer options on the table for Slot and Hughes but links with Guehi and Upamecano still remain.
In fact, here have even been talks about a potential move for Nico Schlotterbeck, especially since his contract is set to expire next summer.
Liverpool's defence is one of their main areas which needs improvement. A lot of their problems have come from defensive mistakes and if they can improve that area of their squad, things are likely to improve.
At the moment, there's no knowing what could happen to Liverpool's team this season but if they want to try and get their campaign back on track, a new centre-back should be on top of their priority list.
