Richard Hughes makes Federico Chiesa decision

Federico Chiesa is into his second year of being a Liverpool player.

The Italian was signed by Arne Slot and Richard Hughes for a fee worth around £10 million last season with most people thinking Liverpool had just got one of the bargains of the season.

Unfortunately, things haven't quite worked out for the attacker with Slot choosing against starting him on more than one occasion this term.

His lack of game time isn't due to any fault of his own with the Italian often being one of the most entertaining players on the pitch when called upon.

However, his lack of game time has caused some questions to arise with a decision now being made by Liverpool.

Since the 2025-26 season kicked off, Chiesa has been linked with an Anfield exit.

Several clubs were interested in signing the attacker during the summer transfer window but he chose against moving away and wanted to fight for his place.

And, while he has already produced some iconic moments, it's obvious that the 28-year-old deserves to be played more with a new report from La Gazzetta dello Sport outlining when Liverpool plan to make their final decision on his future.

The report starts off by saying that Chiesa remains 'alive' in the eyes of Juventus.

The Italian's former club have been linked with a return for the attacker despite moving him on less than two years ago.

However, before any final decisions are made, Liverpool want to wait until 18 January to see what happens with Mohamed Salah at AFCON.

If a deal is to be struck, the Italian outlet state that it would be a 'loan' deal with Chiesa's versatility vital to Liverpool should Egypt go further in the competition.

The report rounds things up by stating that although Chiesa isn't looking for a way out of Anfield, he isn't 'insensitive' to a Serie A return.

With the number of injuries that Liverpool have already suffered this season, getting rid of someone who's barely missed any games makes next to no sense.

Indeed, it's clear that Slot doesn't trust Chiesa as far as he can throw him but with Salah away with Egypt and Cody Gakpo's form being inconsistent, it feels silly to get rid of an attacker who's proven more than once that he can change a game.

He may not be the best attacker in the Premier League but with how badly things have gone for Liverpool already this term, they literally have nothing to lose.

That is, especially now Alexander Isak has ended up on the sidelines for an extended period.

Even though Slot may not see what fans do in Chiesa, it still feels like he shouldn't be moved on, he can play anywhere across the front three, which, in this day and age, is invaluable.

Here's hoping that his transfer saga comes to an end soon.
