Mo Salah's Liverpool CRISIS: What happens next?

Mo Salah - what happens next? Mohamed Salah has thrown Liverpool’s crisis-hit season into further disarray.

The Egyptian King spoke out following the Reds’ Premier League draw at the weekend - declaring the club had thrown him under a bus and stating that his relationship with Arne Slot is non-existent.

A wedge has been driven between Liverpool’s management and arguably the club’s greatest-ever player. Right now it looks uncertain what happens next.

But we could be facing a situation where the Egyptian King has already played his final game for the club.

In the short term we can expect Salah to miss out against Inter Milan in the Champions League - and there exists a chance of a farewell next weekend at Anfield versus Brighton.

Next week Salah departs Liverpool for the Africa Cup of Nations and he could be out of action for up to a month. So how is the next part of the Salah saga likely to play out?

SALAH LEAVES IN JANUARY

Maybe the most likely option so long as Liverpool can find a willing buyer. Salah signed a new contract towards the end of last season - inking a deal to tie him to Anfield until 2027.

That meant he would NOT leave for free in the summer and guaranteed Liverpool a fee if he were to depart before summer 2027.

We don’t want it to come to this - but maybe FSG and Richard Hughes are thinking that Salah is too big a disruption to continue at the club any longer.

Saudi clubs would come into the running - with Al-Hilal and Al-Qadsiah both thought to be keen. However the days of SPL clubs spending top-dollar on players in their 30s appear over.

Although they could offer a monumental salary these clubs will be wary about paying so much money for a player shortly to turn 34.

If he is to leave in January - and Liverpool are to get his ÂŁ400k per week wages off the books - a compromise may need to be made.

He could do a Ronaldo and have his contract ripped up - like what happened at Manchester United in 2022 - and be free to sign a Saudi super deal.

SALAH STAYS UNTIL THE END OF THE SEASON

This one represents the middle ground. Let’s say Salah misses Inter and Brighton and then the Afcon gives him another month or so to cool off.

With the player away from Slot - and their relationship is showing signs of strain - then the break could do them both good. Salah could return to the club rejuvenated - and less angry - and contribute something towards the run-in.

Then - at the end of the season whatever transpires - Liverpool could find a recipient club for Salah. This could bring San Diego FC into play - although they too would likely require the Reds to waive a transfer fee.

Don’t expect an auction for Salah around Europe’s super clubs. He will be 34, just off a World Cup and in need of a rest before the new season.

SALAH STAYS UNTIL 2027

This one looks a remote possibility right now. Salah still has 18 months - and around ÂŁ30m - remaining on his Liverpool contract.

He’s got trophies to win and records to break. However it is hard to see Salah seeing out his Liverpool contract at this moment in time.

Arne Slot appears to have moved on - using Dominik Szoboszlai as a right-sided attacker - and the club are expected to move for a full-time replacement next summer.

We could see Antoine Semenyo come to the club - or else an up-and-comer like Yankuba Minteh or Yan Diomande. If that happens then Salah will not sit around and play second fiddle.

And FSG will no way entertain the thought of a ÂŁ400k per week substitute. The last thing anyone wants is for Salah to rot away without significant game time.

But for Salah to fulfil his contract - and his Liverpool destiny - requires a lot to change from here on in.

He needs to mend relationships with Arne Slot - or else FSG need to sack the head coach. He needs to be given another chance as a starter. He needs to regain his title-winning form.

That’s a lot to ask from where we are sitting right now.

It’s unlikely Salah will be waved off into the sunset as a free agent in 2027. Far more likely is a departure either in January as a first port of call or else in summer 2026. It wasn’t supposed to end like this.
