Midfielder confirms he's ready to complete massive transfer
A midfielder is confirming with his performances that he's ready to make a massive transfer away from his current club.
Looking around the midfield is probably the one area where Liverpool have plenty of depth. Even so, it's still an area where investment is needed.
Alexis Mac Allister has struggled for a lot of the campaign. Ryan Gravenberch desperately needs a deputy to cover for him. And Dominik Szoboszlai cannot be trusted to continue to perform at 110% or even 120%, sooner or later that will break him.
Curtis Jones has proved as a solid deputy. But behind him with Wataru Endo's injury, Liverpool only really have Trey Nyoni.
And recently with Szoboszlai suspended and Endo out injured we've seen how this lack of depth has had an impact on Slot's ability to change things.
It was lucky that this came at a time when Liverpool are only playing one game a week. But long-term, they do need more bodies. Especially, because it's not guaranteed that Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai will all stay at Anfield.
They also need more energy in the midfield. A lot of the times this season, it has felt like Szoboszlai was the only one really carrying the stamina in the middle of the park.
In order for Arne Slot's system to be successful, Liverpool need more dynamism and running in the middle of the park. That's what Slot's total football is all about.
Perhaps it's no surprise that as Anfield Watch understands Liverpool are looking at the midfield market and high up on the club's list is Carlos Baleba.
Liverpool are long-term admirers of Baleba and monitored his situation in the summer when he came close to signing for Manchester United.
The Reds were ready to strike with an offer of their own.
Of course, ultimately Baleba ended up staying at Brighton, and rumours have quietened around him. Part of that is because he has been in a relatively poor run of form.
This is no doubt influenced by the fact that the player feels like he wasn't able to complete his dream transfer in the summer and make the move away from Brighton.
That disappointment may have led to lukewarm performances, rather than what others have suggested which is that Baleba has simply been 'found-out' in the Premier League.
The Brighton midfielder confirmed this at the African Cup of Nations. In both of Cameroon's matches, he was Baleba of old, dictating the game and showing his dynamism and intelligence.
These performances have caught the attention and it's proof his form at club level is merely temporary and a result of his desire to leave.
Baleba's recent performances and actions at AFCON simply just confirm that he's ready to make that massive move in his career. He doesn't want to be stagnating at Brighton any longer.
