Michael Edwards on brink of finally achieving dream Liverpool transfer
Michael Edwards could finally see Liverpool land the kind of player he's been chasing for a long, long time. Fingers crossed.
Michael Edwards may not be Liverpool sporting director anymore but he's still one of the major decision makers at the club. He's now CEO of Football with FSG, essentially overseeing all operations.
Returning in 2024 allowed him to chase many of the players he'd previously missed out on. Two of them arrived in the summer, with Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak joining for record-breaking fees.
Edwards had laid the groundwork for those deals many years ago but initially failed to get them done. Armed with the funds this time around, Liverpool secured the two biggest transfers in their history.
But it doesn't mean they'll stop there. Correcting the mistakes of the past seems to be a plan here - and that means returning to another failed deal in Brazil.
Liverpool's Brazil struggle
Liverpool have long tried to sign the biggest prospects from Brazil. They always run into the same problem, though.
Certain other clubs are far, far more comfortable paying enormous fees for relatively unproven talent. Liverpool never have been and that's led to them being beaten to signings for a long time now.
Rodrygo Goes was where they got closest. A deal with Santos looked all but done, only for Elano, then a coach at the club, to convince them they should wait one year as Rodrygo's value was sure to skyrocket.
They took a chance on him and were completely correct. Real Madrid paid a massive amount to sign him, blowing Liverpool out of the water.
The Reds tried for Endrick recently, too, but again failed. Vincius Jr was another linked with a move to Anfield - they've essentially had eyes on every great Brazil prospect over the past decade plus.
None have joined. That awful streak now looks like it may come to an end as Liverpool are reportedly the preferred buyer for Allan of Palmeiras.
Local outlet 'The Football' reports as much, saying a €35m deal is on the table. One again, Liverpool have a chance to succeed where they'd previously failed under Edwards.
