Michael Edwards is closing in on genius transfer
Michael Edwards is closing in on a genius transfer for Liverpool.
Edwards has found himself under a bit more scrutiny lately as questions continue to grow around Liverpool’s long-term direction under FSG.
The club’s former sporting director, who now serves as FSG’s Head of Football Operations, played a major role in overseeing Liverpool’s heavy spending last summer. While the investment hasn’t fully paid off yet, it’s important to stress the word “yet.” Many of the players brought in are still young, highly rated talents, and there’s every chance the project could still come together over time.
Still, some of the criticism surrounding Edwards goes beyond recruitment alone. When he returned to work with FSG, one of the biggest expectations was that he would help lead Liverpool into a new multi-club model, similar to the structures used successfully by several of Europe’s top sides.
So far, though, that vision appears to have stalled. The multi-club idea now seems to be on the back burner, and that has naturally led to more questions about Edwards’ long-term future within the organisation.
His current deal runs until 2027, but there has been little indication from either Liverpool or FSG about extending his stay beyond that point.
Despite the uncertainty, Edwards is still expected to remain fully focused on strengthening Liverpool over the coming years.
As a lifelong supporter of the club, he will still be determined to help the Reds compete at the highest level and build a squad capable of long-term success.
It’s fair to say Liverpool’s recruitment strategy has evolved positively since Edwards returned to the club.
The Reds are now exploring markets they rarely tapped into before, with the club expanding its global scouting network and identifying talent from a much wider range of countries and competitions.
That approach has already led to the arrivals of Armin Pecsi, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye. Meanwhile, Sidy Barhama Ndiaye - who spent two weeks training with Liverpool last summer - is still expected to join the club once he turns 18, unless there is a major change in his situation.
Samuel Martinez has been snapped up from Colombia, and he will join Liverpool in a year when he celebrates his 18th birthday.
Liverpool’s recruitment team now seem far more willing to target untapped markets and move quickly for players who stand out at youth level tournaments around the world.
Both Ndiaye and Ndukwe caught attention with their performances at the U17 World Cup, while Daniel Banjaqui is another youngster from the tournament in Qatar who has attracted interest from the club. Martinez impressed at the U17 Copa America.
And from the looks of things, those players are unlikely to be the only emerging talents Liverpool’s scouts have been keeping a close eye on.
Liverpool have emerged as one of the frontrunners to secure Kennet Eichhorn's signature.
He's only 16-years-old and he's already a regular for Hertha Berlin, who are playing in the 2.Bundesliga.
Eichhorn has become a key pillar there over the course of the campaign. Born in 2009, he actually became the youngest player to score in the DFB Pokal, which is the German equivalent of the FA Cup.
Now, it looks like Liverpool are in advanced talks to secure his services. Florian Plettenberg has reported that 'Liverpool want to sign him now and then loan him out for 1-2 years to a club ideally playing in the Champions League.'
According to Plettenberg, the move is so advanced that 'Liverpool are already speaking with clubs that could become possible loan destinations.'
If Liverpool could get this over the line, which it is looking increasingly likely, it could be huge. Liverpool are clearly closing in on his signature if talks are so advanced they are at a stage where loan moves are being explored.
Eichhorn is one of the best 2009-born players playing in Europe right now. Even if Liverpool have to wait a year for him to join the Reds, it's worth securing his signature now, and it is something to be excited about for Liverpool supporters. This would simply be a genius transfer from Edwards.
