Xabi Alonso one step CLOSER to Liverpool job

Arne Slot was confirmed as the new Liverpool head coach back in 2024, apparently beating Ruben Amorim to the job.

The Dutchman, 47, made a storming start to life on Merseyside - overseeing a Premier League title win in his first season in charge.

However, Slot is suffering right now - losing six of his last seven Premier League games and looks like a man without the answers to Liverpool’s problems.

Accordingly, it’s beginning to be speculated that FSG, sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of Football Michael Edwards may soon take a decision to remove Slot as head coach.

Arne Slot in trouble at Liverpool

Under contract only until 2027, it would not cost the club a fortune to dispense with Slot - and talk would soon settle on who could replace him.

And there could well soon emerge an opportunity to move for a head coach that was very much on FSG’s list before Slot’s appointment was made official.

Xabi Alonso was well-liked inside Anfield during an incredible, unbeaten league and cup double campaign with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24.

But towards the end of that season he dramatically distanced himself from moving on from Leverkusen. The former Liverpool midfielder stayed put for the 2024/25 season but was unable to defend his crown.

Madrid worries grow over Alonso

Real Madrid saw enough however to be convinced that Alonso was the man to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

The ex-Spain international arrived in time for the FIFA Club World Cup - overseeing a run to the semi-finals. But all is not well inside the Bernabeu however and Alonso’s march to the exit may have already begun.

There are rumbles of discontent from the Madrid players in the media - unhappy at Alonso’s exacting methods. It appears there is a rupture in the relationship with Vinicius Junior meanwhile and Alonso’s radical tactical tweaks have not gone down well.

There have been damaging defeats to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool - while the weekend draw against Elche has really brought the knives out.

Xabi Alonso back on Liverpool radar?

It may now be inevitable that a Madrid revolt will see the curtain brought down early on Alonso’s tenure as Barcelona accelerate towards the top of the LaLiga table.

Madrid remain ahead by a point but are without a win in their last two games - against Elche and Rayo Vallecano. If things don’t turn around soon then Alonso may find himself out of a job - with uncertainty surrounding Slot at Liverpool too.

We may see a situation in the next couple of weeks where FSG decide Slot’s fate and Madrid do similar with Alonso. And one of the Boston-based organisation's top picks for the post-Jurgen Klopp shakeup could be all of a sudden back on the menu.

Liverpool missed out on Alonso once before but the time may soon be right to appoint him.
