Liverpool DEFINITELY want to sign another Germany international
Liverpool have been linked with several centre-backs over the last few months.
Owing to a lack of viable first-team performers in the position - as well as uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate - it has been speculated that sporting director Richard Hughes may well dip into the market for another option.
Giovanni Leoni was brought to the club in a £26m deal from Parma over the summer but the 18-year-old suffered a torn ACL on debut.
Liverpool step up centre-back chase
It means that Konate - along with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez - represent the only available players at Arne Slot’s disposal right now.
The Premier League champions missed out on signing Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day - but may well try again for the England man in January.
Other options include Alessandro Bastoni, Inter Milan’s Italian international centre-back, as well as Ronald Araujo of Barcelona.
But perhaps the most suitable centre-back potentially available to the Merseyside club right now is Nico Schlotterbeck.
Nico Schlotterbeck is a Liverpool target
The German international, 25, is just about to head into the final 18 months of his Borussia Dortmund contract having first joined the club ahead of the 2022/23 season.
A Champions League finalist in 2024, the left-footer has risen to become one of the most consistent central defenders in the Bundesliga.
Time looks to be ticking down on his Dortmund reign however - and Liverpool have been tipped to conduct a cut-price deal for the former Freiburg player in 2026.
That’s according to a new report in Football Insider, which claims that summer 2026 represents the transfer window when Liverpool will pull the trigger for Schlotterbeck.
Liverpool will definitely look for Schlotterbeck deal
“Liverpool will definitely be in that race to try and sign him and bring him to England if they can,” the report reads.
“A top player like that, you might be able to get him for a cut-price fee next summer, especially if he’s going into the final year of his contract with Dortmund without any agreement on an extension.
“They might be able to get him for a lot lower fee than you would normally expect for a current Germany international as well.”
Schlotterbeck has just helped Germany under Julian Nagelsmann qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup - where they will be hoping to do a lot better than a group stage exit in Qatar in 2022.
