Alexander-Arnold was content to let his contract elapse - in the full knowledge that he would land a sizeable signing-on fee as well as a significant pay rise.

Trent had secured his dream move - or so it seemed.

Trent secures dream move to Madrid

He made his debut in Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign - but missed the semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain owing to injury.

That led to eyebrows being raised around the Bernabeu - as Madrid expected a more robust right-back. With Dani Carvajal out injured since October 2024 - they needed a replacement to rely on.

But things have somehow got worse for Trent.

Spanish media reported that his lack of defensive nous was keeping Xabi Alonso awake at night and then came his LaLiga debut.

Trent endures torrid spell

The 26-year-old lasted only 67 minutes before being hauled off by the new Madrid boss Alonso. In a little over an hour he gave the ball away 15 times - with Carvajal being summoned to put him out of his misery.

And then at the weekend Trent was DUMPED from the lineup for the game away at Real Oviedo. The starting spot was given to Carvajal, who also put on the captain’s armband.

It spells disaster for Trent - with prominent Madrid voices now expecting the 33-year-old Spanish international to maintain his grip on the shirt.

Trent's dream becomes a nightmare

Alexander-Arnold has got a massive job on his hands to regain his place in the team. And now Defensa Central claims that the player has outlined the scale of his challenge in a private communication with Bellingham.

"Either I raise my level or playing for this team will be difficult..." he is reported to have said.

All of this should serve as a red alert for Konate.

He has been prone to the occasional lapse and wasn’t at his best in the opening stages of the season. The Madrid media are relentlessly unforgiving while Xabi Alonso has shown he will not bow down for reputations alone.

Trent is having a torrid time in Madrid - alone and far away from the affection delivered to him by the Anfield crowd. That’s why Konate should pay a very particular heed. Your Real Madrid dream can turn into a nightmare before it’s begun.
