Liverpool learn sad TRUTH about Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool fans were left distraught by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to quit the club.
At Anfield since the age of six, the right-back declined to renew his contract - paving the way for a move to Real Madrid.
As the 15-time European champions wanted Trent on board for the FIFA Club World Cup, Richard Hughes made them pay £10m in order to get the player early.
The defender featured up until the semi-final stage - a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain that he missed owing to injury.
That absence raised alarm bells among the Madrid media - who questioned the signing of a right-back who was prone to injuries.
Trent's Madrid nightmare
He started the Spanish league season in possession of the starting shirt - but fell out of favour quickly to the returning Dani Carvajal.
It became apparent that the England international was going to be used in place of the veteran Spain international only to keep Carvajal fresh for the latter stages of the season.
And on one of his Champions League outings - against Marseille - he suffered yet another injury which ruled him out of around two months of action.
The 27-year-old recently made his return to the competitive arena - even if his performances were under scrutiny by Madrid fans and media alike.
Trent Alexander-Arnold hit by two-month injury blow
He featured from the start against Athletic Club on Wednesday night - contributing a fine assist for Kylian Mbappe - but disaster has struck again. He did not even last an hour of the clash at San Memes - being replaced early in the second half by Raul Asencio.
Madrid reporter Aranche Rodriguez has confirmed that Trent has suffered more injury woe - this time a quadriceps problem that is expected to sideline him for up to two months.
It’s clear the move isn’t working out for Trent - who has also lost his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England setup.
And while tears were shed at the homegrown hero leaving the club after two decades - the truth of this transfer is now becoming clear.
Trent will never be the same player
Injury has afflicted Trent quite significantly over the last three seasons.
According to Transfermarkt, the defender has been absent for over 200 days since the start of the 2023/24 season - missing around 43 matches in total.
In an ideal world, yes Liverpool may have been able to tie Trent down to a new contract but what a risk it would have been. He was already earning £180k per week at Anfield - with his Real contract worth around £280k per week.
That would have been a tremendous waste of money given his fitness issues.
Maybe it’s time to face up to the truth that Liverpool got the best out of Trent before his time at the club elapsed.
