Liverpool declined to add any midfielders during the summer transfer window.

That was despite lavishing the squad with £450m worth of new signings. But the toll is beginning to tell on Arne Slot’s current crop.

We’ve seen injury trouble afflict Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo already this term - while Dominik Szoboszlai has been utilised as a problem-solver in too many positions.

To compound matters sporting director Richard Hughes opted to let several midfield players LEAVE over the summer - with James McConnell and Harvey Elliott departing on loan and Tyler Morton permitted to go on a permanent deal to Lyon.

Camavinga could be available for €60m

Hence the Reds are currently short on options in midfield - meaning a deal for a new midfielder could be pursued either in January or next summer.

And a tantalising prospect has just opened up - with reported Reds’ target Eduardo Camavinga potentially available for only €60m.

The Frenchman, 23, has been at Real Madrid since 2021 - winning two Champions League titles - but isn’t seen as a favourite of new head coach Xabi Alonso.

He hasd been short of starts this season - making only three in LaLiga - and has been challenged to step up or be sold.

Camavinga can play three different positions

That will be music to the ears of Richard Hughes - with Camavinga boasting the potential to improve the Anfield club in three positions.

Not only can the France international play central midfield but he can also cover defensive midfield and even left-back.

Under contract until 2029, in normal circumstances a player of his quality would go for a lot more than €60m but Liverpool could well capitalise on his troubles.

Step up or be sold say Real Madrid

“Real Madrid expects the French player to step up his game in the remainder of the season, or if that doesn't happen, his status will change from indispensable to a player for whom offers will be considered,” a report in Defensa Central reads.

“Obviously, he won't be given away for free, but if any club, especially in the Premier League, were to offer close to €60 million for the Frenchman, Eduardo Camavinga could end up leaving next year.”

Several reports over the last couple of months - in England and in Spain - have suggested that Camavinga is a potential Liverpool target.

Now that his Real Madrid future has been thrown up in the air, the Premier League champions should steal in and do a deal for one of the best progressive midfield players around.
