Liverpool have had their eyes on a massive young talent for their first-team squad. Paul Joyce delivered the update.

Liverpool have completed a lot of business in this transfer window, bringing in a plethora of stars. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have all arrived as potential starters.

It’s an incredible amount of money spent to upgrade the squad, especially as Liverpool have thus far failed to sign top-target Alexander Isak. The ambition is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

It’s been met with outgoings, too. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz have all left the club for decent fees.

One of those sales, however, is more notable than the others: Quansah’s. Liverpool let him leave despite having no obvious replacement and as things stand, they don’t have four centre-backs.

It’s especially concerning as Ibrahima Konate’s future is also in doubt as he now has under one year remaining on his contract. Liverpool, though, are trying to rectify the situation.

Liverpool's centre-back search

Paul Joyce writes in The Times that Liverpool are most certainly looking at centre-back options. Marc Guehi is the most heavily-mentioned, understandably.

The Crystal Palace captain has been strongly linked with Liverpool as he's in the final year of his contract. He will almost certainly move next summer but there's a small chance that Palace sell in 2025.

They'd almost certainly want a large amount of money, however, and as Joyce says, that figure will determine whether Liverpool seriously consider an approach this summer.

The more notable name he mentions is Geovanni Leoni. The Reds have been linked with Leoni before and he's an incredibly interesting idea.

He's still only 18 but featured 17 times in Serie A for Parma last season. Leoni is unquestionably one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe right now - and potentially a homegrown player if Liverpool get him this summer.

One to watch, then. As Palace make the Guehi pursuit a difficult one, Leoni might end up being the ideal option for the Reds.
