It’s been a tough season thus far for Liverpool from a defensive standpoint.

Firstly, they conceded twice at Wembley in the Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace. And in the opening two games of the Premier League season they have been equally porous.

Arne Slot’s men conceded two more goals against Bournemouth at Anfield during their first league outing with Ibrahima Konate coming under severe scrutiny.

Again during Monday’s 3-2 win against Newcastle the defence was suspect - letting in two more goals and confirming a problem in the backline.

Liverpool hope to conclude deal for Guehi

Konate’s form is a concern - and Liverpool could do with a proper senior option to push the Frenchman for his place in the team.

And it now looks like the Reds are going to get their wish - with Marc Guehi set to sign from Crystal Palace any day now.

The England international, 25, is out of contract in 2026 and his club have been desperate to bank some transfer income on their captain this summer.

The Eagles have been hopeful of getting £40m for their star centre-back but so far Liverpool have been making them sweat.

Guehi reaches agreement with Palace

A new report in Football Insider suggests the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes won’t budge from £35m - but will top up that sum with some achievable add-ons.

Moreover, the report adds that a deal for Guehi could be finalised any day now - once Crystal Palace’s UEFA Europa Conference League tie against Fredrikstad is out of the way.

According to the report there has been an agreement between Palace and Guehi that he can leave once these play-off games are concluded.

Could Konate now leave?

With the FA Cup holders in action in Norway on Thursday, we could very soon have a green light in Guehi’s Anfield move.

Given Konate’s form it would be no surprise to see Guehi immediately displace the 26-year-old in Arne Slot’s lineup.

Alternatively, it could spell the end of Konate’s Liverpool tenure if a willing buyer can be found before September 1.

He too is out of contract in 2026 and Liverpool would be keen to make some money back on a player they paid £35m for back in 2021.
