Forward confirms talks over Liverpool RETURN

Liverpool opted to send several young and fringe players out on loan at the start of the season.

It’s fair to say those deals have been a mixed bag thus far. The likes of James McConnell and Owen Beck have already returned ahead of schedule while the future of others including Harvey Elliott remains up in the air.

One player seeking to capitalise on a productive loan spell during the 2024/25 season is Lewis Koumas. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Stoke - playing almost 50 times for the Championship side.

For the 2025/26 season it was decided to send the forward on loan to ambitious Birmingham City - but it’s not been an altogether positive experience.

Lewis Koumas linked with Liverpool return

Although the Wales international has been involved in plenty of matchday squads, until recent weeks he was finding significant game time hard to come by.

Benefitting from an injury problem suffered by Demarai Gray, Koumas has found his way into Chris Davies’ starting lineup of late.

Koumas scored his first goal of the season against high-flying Coventry a few weeks back. And he looks set to have an extended run in the team owing to Gray’s absence - with the former Leicester star not due to return until the end of January.

Koumas had Liverpool conversations

The player has now admitted to the Birmingham Mail that talks have been held with parent club Liverpool - indicating that an early return could be on the cards.

“We’ve obviously had conversations (with Liverpool) but I’m keeping my head down, working hard and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

If Liverpool decide to end Koumas’s loan spell ahead of schedule then it’s unlikely he would remain with the senior squad for the rest of the season.

More likely is that the versatile attacker is fixed up with another loan move in the Championship or elsewhere for the second half of the campaign.

Koumas has already played - and scored - for Liverpool’s first team - making a breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp - but hasn’t yet been given a chance under Arne Slot.
