Ibrahima Konate RESPONDS to Liverpool's latest contract offer
Liverpool have got a contract problem to solve over Ibrahima Konate.
The Frenchman joined the Reds back in 2021 from RB Leipzig in a £35m deal. Last season he established himself as Virgil van Dijk’s preferred defensive partner - winning the 2024/25 Premier League title in tandem with the Dutchman.
But the 26-year-old’s current contract expires in 2026 - and up to now there has been no sign of a breakthrough.
In fact previous reports suggest the France international’s camp have turned down Richard Hughes’ attempts to extend his deal.
Konate's camp in talks with Liverpool
Currently making around £140k per week, it has previously been claimed that Konate would like around £200k or more to renew.
Liverpool have so far been unconvinced to meet the centre-back’s demands - leading to speculation that he would be moving to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
Konate will be free to discuss terms over a free transfer with foreign teams come January - meaning the next six weeks are pivotal.
Asked about his future plans on international duty, the World Cup finalist reminded the media that no new contract offer had come his way.
Konate's priority is a Liverpool deal
But now a report in Rousing the Kop is claiming that talks took place over the recent international window.
And - furthermore - there are encouraging signs for Liverpool fans because those talks have moved forward in a positive fashion.
“The latest round of talks is understood to have taken place during the November international break, during which Konate captained France,” the report reads.
“Liverpool are happy with the meetings that took place and remain ‘hopeful’ that an agreement can be reached for Konate to stay.
“Konate’s camp have made it clear to Liverpool that their client has not agreed terms with any other club.
“The France international is prioritising Liverpool, with the Reds understood to be planning a renewed attempt to reach an agreement.”
These are promising signs for Konate deal
Liverpool would dearly love to prevent Konate from leaving on a free. Although his form hasn’t been optimum this season, there are very few better defenders than him when he’s at his best.
That he is prioritising talking to Liverpool is a great sign. Let’s hope he listens to what the Anfield club have got to say before the time comes to talk to Madrid or Bayern.
