Spain FIFA World Cup-winning midfielder wanted to replace Alexis Mac Allister
Liverpool are coming to a crossroads regarding Alexis Mac Allister.
The 27-year-old Argentine is out of contract in 2028 and so far there are no signs of a new deal on the horizon. If things don’t change dramatically in the next few months then the 2024/25 Premier League champions will be forced to reckon with a sale.
Mac Allister joined the Reds from Brighton back in 2023 for £35m and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Nonetheless decision-makers inside Anfield have been reluctant to come to terms over a new contract for the No10 - despite lavishing mammoth sums on deals for Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in recent months.
Liverpool risk losing Mac Allister
Without a breakthrough Andoni Iraola’s side risk losing Mac Allister for nothing in 2028 - and may therefore consider an outbound deal either in January or summer 2027.
Real Madrid are waiting in the wings for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner - and if he leaves then Iraola will surely need a senior midfield option.
And according to a report in Fichajes Barcelona midfielder Gavi is the name in the frame.
“Gavi, the 22-year-old midfielder, is making headlines at FC Barcelona as he has appeared on Liverpool's radar for the 2027 summer transfer window,” the report reads.
Liverpool want Gavi to replace Mac Allister
Gavi is under contract with his boyhood club until 2030 but has slipped down the pecking order under Hansi Flick this term. The 22-year-old has seen his status slip from mainstay to backup since the arrival of Rodri from Manchester City last summer.
And with Frenkie de Jong back in contention the report claims that Gavi is now “up for sale” by the Spanish champions.
“The English club is considering him as a possible replacement for Alexis Mac Allister, whose contract has yet to be renewed, while the Spanish international has seen his playing time diminish under Hansi Flick following the arrival of Rodri Hernández," the report continues.
The FIFA World Cup winner is a three-time La Liga champion and a previous recipient of the coveted Golden Boy award.
He has only made two starts in the Spanish top flight this term however and could be sacrificed in order to generate some much-needed transfer income at Camp Nou.
