Arne Slot made a promise to Florian Wirtz that secured his desire to play for Liverpool. Now the boss must keep it.

Florian Wirtz is set to join Liverpool - presuming the Reds can meet Bayer Leverkusen’s asking price. Though, it’s difficult to believe things could have got this far without a belief at Anfield that they’d do that.

For one thing, Leverkusen will be eager to sort a move to Liverpool for their star asset. They really, really don’t want to see him playing at Bayern Munich and sending Wirtz to the Premier League suits them greatly.

Willing negotiators, then.

Getting Wirtz himself to agree a move to Liverpool was always going to be tougher, yet the Reds have done it. Part of that is down to meeting with Arne Slot where the Dutchman discussed his plans with the player.

Those plans have really appealed to Wirtz - and a new report explains exactly why.

Arne Slot’s promise to Florian Wirtz

Seud Deutsche reports that Wirtz was a big fan of Slot’s plan for him. The Liverpool boss primarily made it clear to the playmaker that he’d play in his preferred no.10 role.

That’s an interesting one, given Liverpool have several players capable of playing in that role. Dominik Szoboszlai has played it consistently this season - but it appears Slot is ready to change things.

That’ll mean a shift for Szoboszlai more than anyone. That was trialled against Brighton last week, however, with the Hungarian playing a deeper role for Liverpool.

But importantly, Bayern couldn’t offer that same guarantee. The fact they have Jamal Musiala in their ranks means Vincent Kompany didn’t tell Wirtz he’d play his favoured position.

Instead, the idea was the have the two of them play the same role, essentially. They’d swap in games and develop a partnership, presumably.

That didn’t convince Wirtz, who prioritises how he’ll be playing his football with his big choice here. Liverpool will let him play the way he wants to, while Bayern were hoping he’d adapt to them.

Of course, now Slot needs to keep that promise. That depends as much on Wirtz immediately clicking into the role at Liverpool, admittedly.

If he does, he’s going to be Liverpool’s no.10 for a long time to come.
