Amongst all the signings and departures this summer, contracts are at the heart of negotiations.

The terms agreed for incomers will need to be fitting and those at the club who are nearing the end of their deals will be quietly assessing their options.

Allowing anyone to enter the last year of their deal is unacceptable. Liverpool only just managed to get away with it this season with Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk eventually extending with us.

Ibrahima Konate is the next red flag to consider and given interest from rival clubs such as PSG that are based in his home city, the Reds will need to act with extreme caution to resolve the situation.

Konate will likely remain a Red next season

Of course, contract talks with the club are currently stalled, so our optimism around the Frenchman's future should be muted to an extent, but a summer move away has now been cast into doubt.

Speaking with The Athletic earlier this week, Konate opened up and gave us an insight into where his head is at after an extremely busy season and we're led to believe his focus is only on Liverpool.

He said: "The most important thing is not to rest on our laurels.

"We've won the Premier League, which is magnificent and which made everyone happy, but it's not an end in itself. I want to win it again next year. Or win the Champions League.

"When next season begins, we shouldn't forget about the title, because we won it and it's etched in history, but we'll need to set it aside and say to ourselves, 'That's behind us. Now, do we have the desire and the physical and mental strength to do what we did last season again?'".

Does that sound like a player who is weighing up his options? No, to put it simply. You could easily be mistaken for reading those quotes and forgetting that he's a player whose future is in doubt.

But it's true. Anfield Watch is aware of interest from Paris Saint Germain in the 26-year-old and they're willing to offer him the captaincy if he decides to join his boyhood club.

Most would assume that his thinking might be a little clouded given the situation he finds himself in, yet he could hardly have been any clearer in his perspective. Next season is going to be spent on Merseyside if Konate gets his way. So where does that leave us?

Well, his contract is up in 2026, so we're literally stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either a breakthrough is reached in contract negotiations or he is sold elsewhere.

In previous interviews, he's been particularly relaxed about things and if the club values him as much as the fans do, then we'll have no issues with tying him down to a new deal. As such, the ball is firmly in Richard Hughes' court. The next few months of updates will be fascinating.
