Left-back is one area that is in line for an upgrade. Liverpool have been very well served by Andy Robertson over the last eight years - with the Scot among the best signings the club ever made.

But at 31 - and with just one year left on his contract - time is ticking on Robbo’s Liverpool career. He hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons - with Arne Slot often preferring to use Kostas Tsimikas.

Liverpool looking for new left-back

Robertson’s consistency has slipped a little this season and for that reason Liverpool are in the market for a new performer in the position.

Milos Kerkez is widely seen as the No1 pick - with Hughes having signed the Hungarian once before when he was technical director at Bournemouth.

It has previously been speculated that Tsimikas would be sacrificed to make way for Kerkez - as Liverpool would have no use for three senior left-backs.

But now Robertson has hinted that he may be the one to leave. In an interview with BBC’s Match of the Day, the Scotland captain was in a reflective mood, offering a clue that he too could be set to leave.

“Obviously, the club are going to have a busy summer, so we need to see where everyone stands,” he disclosed on Sunday.

“But it’s been a special time here, I loved my time here, it’s been eight special years, and I’ve cherished every moment I’ve played in front of these fans, especially at Anfield.

“Today was special.”

Robertson has been linked in recent weeks to Celtic - the club he supported as a boy. Overall he's played 342 matches for the Reds, winning all the major honours available to him over the last eight years.
